I have a bit of a problem with my Compaq Prolinea 466. I upgraded to a amd 5x86 but it only runs at 100mhz, Ive tried setting the dip switch to different settings that aren't on the small chart provided on the computer. The computer auto detects the CPU voltage and multiplier and I was wondering if anyone else ran into this same problem and if there is a way to override the automatic multiplier to 2x so the 4x86 runs at 133mhz.

Funny you should ask as I am playing with a VLB board at the moment that does not allow me to set the multiplier, only the FSB. Unfortunately it doesn't support 3v CPUs without a regulator adaptor (something I don't have) so I cannot test out a chip with a higher multiplier at the moment. Either way, the multiplier is less likely to be the problem here - what's the fastest bus speed the board supports?

From the AMD Am5x86 datasheet,

CLKMUL
Clock Multiplier (Input)
The microprocessor samples the CLKMUL input signal
at RESET to determine the design operating frequency.
An internal pull-up resistor connects to VCC, which selects
Clock-tripled mode if the input is High or left floating.
For Clock-quadrupled mode, the input must be
pulled Low. For 133-MHz processors, this input must
always be connected to VSS to ensure correct operation.

Try soldering a wire from Vss to the CLKMUL pin on the bottom of the CPU socket. This should ensure 133 MHz operation.

Plan your life wisely, you'll be dead before you know it.

Your old CPU had an internal multiplier such that 33MHz x2 = 66MHz.
There is no automatic 2x multiplier on the board. That board doesn't have a multiplier at all. It's in the CPU.
(Changing between 25MHz and 33MHz is not a multiplier, it's a switch.)

I agree with feipoa.
I think that board does not support the AMD 5x86-133 and what is actually happening is you are running on the CPUs internal 3x multiplier.
33MHz FSB x3 = 99MHz [IIRC technically it's 33.3MHz x3 = 99.9MHz - but whatever.]
feipoa's hack should put it in 4x mode so you have 33.3MHz x4 = 133MHz

Alright, thank you for the hack. I will take the board out and solder a wire between the 2 pins. This is a non standard motherboard so it might give me a bit of trouble getting it out.

So I connected pin r17 to a vss pin and the computer started up, but the computer still runs at 100mhz. I ran a benchmark and got the same score I get with running it at 100mhz. I used this socket diagram to find out where the pins i needed were http://ptgmedia.pearsoncmg.com/images/chap3_0 … nks/03fig15.gif
I used r17 and u17. Was I supposed to use a vss pin on the cpu?

**EDIT**
Wow I feel like a dumb s**t. i needed to follow the diagram on the amd reference pdf..... Ill be back soon to fix the problem

Sorry for the 3rd post in a row but I got it to work. I should have looked at the 5x86 document first.

Second try. I think it looks alright for being as tiny as it is.

It works!
