stamasd--I think most of us in this thread are in the same boat. Just list the cpus you owned during your years of upgrading. I realized for many of us who collect, that can make the list a mile long, so I put in the restriction "when they were new" so that you listed cpus you bought while they were available new.

PS--I loved the celery 300a, that was on my list too. 😉

I still have the C300A system in working condition (with Abit BH6). Sadly it's not my original one, since about 10 years ago I gave that one away to a friend who was too poor to buy his own computer; I don't know if he still has it, but probably not. I became nostalgic a few years ago and bought the same components to replicate my first computer. I couldn't sadly find the exact same heatsink, but I did get one that's pretty close.

And as tayyare said new home built PCs usually means a new CPU, even if it was released a year or two ago. I myself never bought a prebuild/branded computer either, yet my list is very short because I'm not an overclocker and wanted my PCs to last for as long as possible; by the time I got the Pentium 4 however I grew tired of the rat race and just stayed with the Athlon XP for close to 10 years (I still can't believe I used it as my daily driver for that long). The main reasons i built the Core i5 are the Web and current work assignments, gaming is a secondary benefit; it's also quite probably my last new homebuilt computer as current hardware developments are too bland and boring for me - I'll very likely make do with incremental updates from now on.

This is going to be hard. I can start with dates, but as adulthood came into full swing, the upgrades were too numerous. I don't know if my memory will serve.

1990 286 8MHz -This was the family's first computer at home. I was 8, and not yet hooked.

1993 486 SX 25MHz - In late '93, I had became very interested in PCs through school. I begged and pleaded... I would hoard newspaper sale papers and drool over machines. One fateful Friday night, I had saved an ad from Best Buy and hatched a plan. I sat down in the living room after dinner with my mom and dad and pulled out the paper... "Dad, maybe this weekend can we MAYBE go look at new computers?" "No, son... we can go tonight." This was it. A packard bell multi-media legend complete with 4megs of ram and a 210MB connor hard drive. I have never been the same.

i repair computers so is much more easy to me to sell the parts of my rigs before the warranty expires. Currently with an A4 i can do all i want so there's no need to waste my money.

Also is a lot harder to sell an i5/a10 in countrys like Argentina.

is the A4-7300K really faster then the A6-5400k ?

no, about the same, the GPU is 10-20% faster and runs much more cooler.

A big improvment for me was to add a second ddr3-1600 4gb stick, dual channel really counts on the APU 😀
i'm pretty happy, cheap price and good performance. i play fallout 4 on it does well. (1280x768, medium)
(it even runs on the A4-5300, resized textures, sound data reduced in quality..)

indeed, i built a a4-7300k with 2x2gb Kingston 1600 for my newphew's and i was a amazed how it ran mortal kombat 9, pro evolution soccer 2016 and Battlefield 3. Best price/performance for a budget gaming PC.

After that i always had really old CPUs. My first computer i got on my own back in 08 or so had a pentium 4 2.8ghz socket 775/Windows XP. I used that computer until December of 2014.

until the P4 it was shared with the family, I will not mention secondary PCs, test parts or stuff that I kept only for a few weeks, or things that were used

~1985: Apple IIc MOS 6502 1MHz (first computer that my parents bought)
~1992: 386SX 16MHz (first x86 PC - it opened a new world but it was underpowered for new games within about 1 year)
1994: 486DX2 66MHz (probably the most impressive CPU upgrade ever. Games that had been painfully slow now ran so much smoother. It had a crap PCChips motherboard though and it was unstable for it's entire life)
1996: Cyrix 6x86 133MHz "P166+" - fast and stable. It was great up until Quake, when the FPU became a glaring weakness.
1998-99(?): AMD K6-3 450MHz - first AGP system. Had a very hard time getting my first AGP 3D accelerator to work, but eventually succeeded.

After that, I started using 2nd hand parts for a few generations. I didn't care to keep up with the newest stuff anymore.

The only new CPU I've bought since then is still in my main PC.
~2010: AMD Phenom2 x2 555 - unlocked to 3 cores and conservatively overclocked, well inside tested margins of stability.
I guess I could go on eBay and max out the CPU pretty cheaply now, but I haven't felt the need. Also, I've seen some signs that my video card is already pushing the PSU pretty hard, so a heavier CPU might be asking for trouble.

Duron 750, Duron 1400, Pentium Dual Core E2140. Other generations were not worthy for me to buy them new.
