I did some testing a couple of day's ago, when I started playing around with my Asus A7V266-E motherboard.
And well... I thought that this would actually go and be a new build. Not that I ever planned this.
It just went ahead to be a complete build in the end. Funny how things just turn out.

I am pretty happy with this build, as the CPU are just feeding the GFX card nice and sweet.
Nothing like a bit of overkill I might add.... 🤣

The complete build is based on the following components:

Asus A7V266-E
Athlon XP 1800+
512mb DDR ram (2x256mb)
Voodoo3-3500 Compaq
North-Q cobber CPU-Cooler
Creative SB-PCI-128 CT:4700
2 x 40gb Seagate Baracuda
Floppy-Drive
CD-Rom Drive

I did a little mod on the Voodoo, installing a Fan from a P-III cooler, using zipties.
The software is Win98SE with all drivers and DX7.
I installed the HDD drives in Raid-1 (mirror). Gaming-rig, using raid.... That's just. 😜
The fan on the Voodoo3 is plugged straight into a fan connector on the motherboard.
It does get a bit noisy, though the CPU fan can be turned down, so this is not that big an issue.

As an late-win98se gaming machine, this feels fast, yet still "old" (retro) compared to other
high performing Win98 machines. The fast P4 machines just feels too clean/chlinical to me.
I just feel this machine has the right balance of two worlds, the new and the old.
Ohhh... Almost forgot. I oiled that chipset cooler. It is running noiseless now. Yay... 😁

It shure looks a bit more "right" than those thick 80mm fan's that can be used.
This is running a bit more noisy, as I wrote, though with noise eliminated elsewere, it is good enough for me.

The mod on the V3 looks cool 😁

Do you happen to know the source of the noise?
I used a similar CPU HSF in one of my builds, except it was a Zalman. It worked perfectly at cooling my 2.2GHz A64 Venice, but I just found the noise too annoying, so I ended up connecting the CPU fan to a 7v adapter and it worked perfectly, except now I have to press F1 every time due to the motherboard reporting CPU fan failure (it's not connected so it think it's dead) but that's only minor imo 😀

The fan modded to the V3 might also be a source of noise. Years ago I was experimenting a lot with mounting mostly small fans to heatsinks, some with screws, some with the green wires I've used a lot and some even with stiff foam (the type used on the bottom of motherboard boxes) and the smaller (and cheaper) fans would easily warp a bit and the turning blades would touch the inner side of the 'fan duct' and make a hefty noise that way. It's of no concern with bigger fans from say 6cm and up as those are much more solidly build.

What PSU are you using? PSU fans could also be noisy and if so, a case fan would push out more hot air from the case before it can enter the PSU, which in turn could (depends on if your PSU has thermal throttling) reduce noise levels...and improve temperatures while at it. The case fan openings look good enough to not cause a lot of noise, could opt to mount a 7v fan in there

Nice impulsive little build 😜

Nice! Please run 3dmark99 on that system and share the result. I would like to compare that to a tualatin p3 with voodoo3.

asus tx97-e, 233mmx, voodoo1, s3 virge ,sb16
asus p5a, k6-3+ @ 550mhz, voodoo2 12mb sli, gf2 gts, awe32

It is actually not bad, as it is less noisy than other build's. I did a measure on it, using a windows phone app called "decibel meter" (not that these apps are accurate) and the results are 50db inside the case and one meter away it drops to somewere between 43 and 45 db.
This is all with the case open. So yeah... Not that noisy. The source is the fan-mod, yet when all the other fan's are running, it does not give a total of "too noisy"....

The PSU that I have used, was from a generic beige computer. It is a "Codegen 300watt" that could be found in every standard build's around all of Denmark in the mid-00's. It is a nice one, though not that good component's inside of it. On the other hand, they are good enough as I only remember one or two geting returned of all those machines that I build in between 2003 and 2006. (I did 10 to 15 a day).

The PSU is a 300 watt, gives 30a on 5volt 20a on 3.3volt and has minus 5volt.

A little update on this build.....

It is still running flawless. I have not seen any issues, lockups, instability and incompatibility at all.
Though DOS gaming are off the chart at this point. So I guess, if any issues are to be found, it is
most likely when I try to run a couple of dos games.

Most Win98se-games up to around 2001, are running fluid and issueless at 1024x768.
As and example. Return To Castle Wolfenstein are running fluid and without issues.

So I guess, this is a fine and solid build. And most of the hardware should be fairly cheap.
If someone wanted to get into this retro thing without owning any old hardware at all.

You should go faster 🤣

I think i used the amigamerlin 2.5 driver.

Mmmm.... Possibly. I should go and check the driver for the Voodoo then.
Thank's for the heads up. 😀
On second thought, this machine is stable as hell, and that is of more value to me.
+7000 3D-Marks are after all, pretty decent for games between 1998 and 2000/early-01. 😉
At the moment, there is no need for more speed.
