Nothing wrong with either. Drivers are mature now and all old games have SLi profiles. I know because I tried every game I used to play from the 2003-2007 period and the all benefit from SLi with the latest 7950 drivers.

I have a similat build planned but I'm going with an even slower platform - socket 939 Athlon X2 4800+ / A8N-SLi / 2GB Kingston DDR400 / 2x7950 512MB from XFX :

This machine is intended for 1400x1050 gaming on a 20" 4:3 LCD. And I've got another SLi build planned around a pair of GTX480 cards for full HD XP gaming - altought I might install windows 7 on it - still undecided.

The heck? Any K8 or newer AMD system is a great platform for an XP build.

SLI can be slower than a single card if you're completely CPU limited. However the 7800GTX is old enough that an X2-6000 should be more than fast enough to drive two of them and reap the benefits.

I saw an x2 6400 drive a gtx 275 and get close to an e6700 driving a gtx280. So I'd say a pair of 7800gtx won't max my vpu at 1680x1050 my res

Also think about it in 2005 your choice was a 2.6ghz fx-60 or 3.2ghz Pentium D 840. For single it was fx-57 or Pentium 4 3.8. I'd say an x2 6000 is plenty

SLI is great and whats wrong with AMD?

SLI & Crossfire is great in the games that support it, but some games were never fixed driver wise and for new releases Crossfire/SLI users almost always have issues. Also some people take notice of microstutter more than other, and it's more prevailent on older cards than newer. I've been running Crossfire setup for the last three years in my main PC, and for me it's never again. Too many issues. Not bashing Crossfire or SLI in paticular, just two card setup is not worth it except as an interim upgrade.

I have a soft spot for the GeForce 7 series 😀

Great price and it's good to see that these parts can be had for cheap. Grab them while you can 😁

Very nice. Eager to see how they perform. If you need some tips for benchmarking let me know.

F.E.A.R. has one built-in. Doom 3 as well. For Far Cry there is an external tool. 3D Mark of course.

Reading this thread makes me miss my 7900 GTX Duo that I once had, it was the card that came before the 7950 gx2 that was originally designed with the G70 in mind but development was so and the few that made it into retail and oem used the G71 core instead. Much longer PCB with much better cooling and power was shared between both planes but with one nasty flaw. The bridge chip used to link both gpus wasn't compatible with a Lot of boards and support was almost not existent. If any of you run into one of these don't bother trying to boot the card on almost all Nvidia and ATI/AMD based boards because of the bios issue (pci bridge), board with an Intel chipset tend to have better luck booting the card.
