Why would you want to collect Pentium 4s?

They are:
-not exactly rare (besides EEs)
-very hot
-inefficient

There is nothing they can do better in any way compared to a Pentium M / Core 2 cpu.
Can someone explain please? 😁

This is was makes them so cool and fun to play with.
Their a dime a dozen, hard to killed yet easily replaced, very fun to overclock and make good space heaters too 🤣
But collecting? I can only see one collecting them if there new in the box, EE or ES, maybe miss stamped IHS 😵

But the bulk of them are worthless. There like a muscle car, cheap, simple to work on and a hole lot of fun, but crap on gas and suck for daily driving.

Maybe that's what he grew up with so he has a soft spot for them. Or maybe because they don't get much love. They weren't exactly the underdog back in the day, but viewed from today, I can see how someone would like to collect them because of they're looked down upon by the majority.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

OC high enough, they will warm your room better than any Core 2 chip 😉

I've accumulated a few (all s478), mostly pulls from dead PCs:

SL5TK 1.7/256/400 Willamette
SL668 1.6A/512/400 Northwood
SL6RZ 2.4B/512/533 Northwood
SL6WG 3.2 HT/512/800 Northwood
SL7B8 3.2 HT/1M/800 Prescott

I have the SL668 in a machine currently. Needless to say it runs vastly cooler than the SL7B8 it replaced (albeit also vastly slower, but not a problem for what I use the machine for).

Should be easy for pretty much any OC'ed Conroe.

That sounds more like a bugged game engine than real world performance difference. It is well known HT gains 20-30% at best.

Well, Prescotts are know to run hotter, even the 3.2 GHz SL6WG would run cooler than the 3.2 GHz SL7B8. It wasn't solved until the Cedar Mill P4

I was like you Arctic, but a couple years ago I found that Northwood isn't actually that bad when compared to Athlon XP.
Yes, it does run hotter, but cooling solutions are generally better and the power is taken from the 12v line, making building Intel instead of contemporary AMD a bit easier.
I also found that (even though I admittedly only ever build a single s478 rig) s478 is easier when it comes to the software department. Some sA chipsets had some issues with chipsets and the Intel chipsetted s478 board I build was easy even though I used a SATA drive.

Yes they run a little bit hotter then Athlon XP, but the difference seems relatively minor. And more modern CPUs may produce more heat than Northwood.

Preshott I never liked much.

So the 4.82 ghz OC Pentium EE 965 was faster. Would an stock EE 965 still beat the x6800 only using the 4 threads and it would beat an OC'd wolfdale too?

Also i found something in Passmark perfomance test v8, i tried running the single thread test in some CPUs, but it seems a Pentium 4 670 scored similar to a Core 2 Duo E6600 when both CPUs are at stock in that single thread test, also it seemed like a willamette P4 1.5 GHz P4 outperforming an Atom N455 on the same single thread test as well

On the 7-Zip benchmarks thread, someone posted results of a Pentium 4 651 overclocked to 4.76 ghz and it outperofrmed a Core 2 Duo E4300 and a Pentium D 935 on the same sheet

Extrapolating from my results, they would still "perform*" pretty close.
Don't forget, I OC'ed X6800 to 3,62GHz (same FSB/RAM config as Pentium XE 965).

At stock, frequency difference is 27,3% between them (C2E X6800 stock x 1,27 = PXE 965 stock).
While OC'ed, difference was a bit bigger : 33%, but still - 5% isn't that big and it's impossible to make a test that would show it (since, as as I know, Multiplayer can't be repeatable like benchmark).

Let's be real, *Hard truth :
BF1 is unplayable on stock settings on both of these (at least, on Multiplayer with 64 Players).
I refuse to test them at stock, since we are talking about dropping 29% off Pentium XE score, and 23% off Core 2 Extreme (!).

C2E E8400 after OC (guessing 4GHz+ ?) vs. Pentium XE 965 4,82GHz ?
Since when this was "a thing" ?!

7-zip : IPC x Frequency = Performance
Cedar Mill has around 55% of Conroe IPC.
So, almost 100% difference in clock speed should (in theory) make them equal.

Biggest would be 1 machine - a 2003 Dell Dimension 4600 that I still use from time to time, I'm not particularly fond of the P4 era because that was when I started in retro-PC gaming, and I remember all the bullshit I got from the hobby at that time and all the people pestering me to buy a Pentium 4 which I could not afford that the time.

I think I have all socket 478 Pentium 4 CPUs except for one or two of the odd 2.6+ Ghz Northwoods with 400 Mhz FSB and I have almost all socket 775 ones except for a few of the Cedar Mills.

I also think I have all or at least almost all Net Burst Celeron CPUs and all Pentium D CPUs including the EE ones and also all S478 and S775 Gallatins.

I do probably not have the Prescott 2M 3.73 GHz P4 EE as it's basicly the exact same CPU as the Prescott 620. All other P4 6x0 Prescott 2M CPUs can also run the 14x multiplier so there is really REALLY no point in owning the P4 EE 3.73 for benching, with that in mind I find it too expensive.

When it comes to socket 423 I only have the P4 1.3 Ghz, the P4 1.4 Ghz and the P4 1.7 GHz if I remember correctly.

I could have some of the Netburst CPUs I think I am missing as I sometimes buy CPUs in large lots and just puts them in storage without sorting them.

New PC: i9 12900K @5GHz all cores @1.2v. MSI PRO Z690-A. 32GB DDR4 3600 CL14. 3070Ti.
Old PC: Dual Xeon X5690@4.6GHz, EVGA SR-2, 48GB DDR3R@2000MHz, Intel X25-M. GTX 980ti.
Older PC: K6-3+ 400@600MHz, PC-Chips M577, 256MB SDRAM, AWE64, Voodoo Banshee.

got another Pentium 4 from a PC i got for really cheap

+ Pentium 4 2.4 GHz Northwood (FSB 400), SL6GS

Is aparently the FSB 400 version instead of the usual FSB 533 model i keep getting from old PCs, so this is a new addition to my CPU collection

also:
+ Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz Prescott s478, SL7K8

i keep finding 3.0E models, is already the 15th one i have xD
