I have two Compaq Deskpro computers. I'm not really a fan of Compaq computers, so I have been thinking to give these computers away or trashing them and take standard components for spare parts if there is something worth taking.

The power supplies have non-standard colors when comparing to other power supplies. Are the colors just different on Compaq power supplies or is there something else too?

Black should allwas be ground, so in order to fire it up, you need to find the one that are usually green (to turn the PSU on).
You know... Connecting the green and one of the black, will usually start an ATX PSU.
If you connect a dummy load, such as a optical drive as the only device, you avoid the risk of doing damage to the PSU.

Now you can use a multimeter and measure the voltages, then compare it with the standard ATX pinout's.
I will see if I can find something about this on google. I can not promise anything though.

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.

What Deskpro model is this? I think i used a Deskpro EP (440BX) motherboard in a Chieftec rack case with a standard ATX PSU without problems. There are some years ago so im not 100% sure, but i think Compaq Deskpro EP used non standard colors on the wires, but the pinout were standard.

Some Compaq pinouts:

And please dont trash them. Theese Compaqs are also getting rare and needs some love too 😊

I once was having some similar problem with me not knowing whether some s370 Compaq of mine did or did not use a standard ATX pin-out.

I knew about the risks when trying a standard ATX PSU with a Compaq board that didn't support it, but I guess I kinda got impatient and decided to just get a bottle of water and one hand at ready to switch off the wall-power, pulled in some cheaper standard ATX PSU and tried to power it on anyway....it worked! No fire 🤣!

Fun times 😀
