hey guys just wondering if anyone with a vintage 1993 machine (i think a 486?) + midi interface was bored and wanted
to test this demo.

i had tried to see if i could get it working but it didnt work for me for some reason,
but the board i tried it with had some funky PCI vs ISA bridge or something that i think might have been to blame?

anyway the file is easy to download from this page:

mlogic15.zip

this is the most ancient pc version of logic audio that i ever found....a midi sequencer music writing application.

surely there must be someone with an MT-32 + a MIDI interface + MIDI keyboard who might want to try this software out???? on windows 3.1?

one of the most earliest versions of Logic Audio

Well, I happen to have some the stuff you mentioned (Roland midi interface, MT-32 and a midi keyboard/DP), however the oldest platform I have at this moment is a 440BX/PII and AGP video cards (Voodoo3s and GFs)... not sure they have Win3.1 driver, so I'll have to look for an old PCI vga (which I would do as I want to build a system that can work with original Myst 1993-1994 CD).

P.S. Oh I see you tried it on a 440BX as well.

P.P.S. Voodoo3 has Win3.1 drivers! I'm going to assemble the parts to try this out, hopefully everything is complete.

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."—Arthur C. Clarke
"No way. Installing the drivers on these things always gives me a headache."—Guybrush Threepwood (on cutting-edge voodoo technology)

Uhm, I do have a MT-32, aswell.. I could try it on a 286 with a SB 2.0 if that helps.

Edit: Just tried, but I'm out of luck. Tried to run install.exe (calls setup.exe), but Windows mentioned an exception error at 0001:5A18.
When I ran miclog_p.exe directly, I got a second error message from the Watcom runtime (Win386).
Apparently, this program has too high requirements and doesn't work on my rig..

chrisNova777, I wish you the very best with this project and hope someone else with a MT32 will take over.
I wished I could build another 386/486 PC for testing, but my room is so crowed, I almost can't walk anymore..
(The PC in the background is a 586 class machine. Maybe I will test it there again in a few days..)

Good news!

I tried it again with my 586 machine and it worked. 😀

To be on the safe side, I disabled the caches first and installed the program afterwards.
Then I also disabled virtual memory, as suggested by the setup prgram.
Instead of MPU-401, I selected the MIDI driver for the SB Pro DSP (not supported by DOSBox).
Doing so made things a lot more stable - the program nolonger crashed my machine.

I also did a little recording for you.
But please think of it more as a proof of the program beeing working..
I was only able to capture the left channel, because my second mono to RCA adapter is missing. 🙁
Hope that's not so bad now. The Software mentions GM Midi, so perhaps it's good to try another synth anyway.

Hello again,

I installed my DB50XG and did a few recordings for you..

They aren't the best I'm afraid, but they are better than nothing, I guess.

I also tried to switch to MT32 compatible mode by playing the db50xg-bank127-mt32.mid file.

However, I didn't hear a notable difference, so perhaps playmid wasn't able to send the
SysEx commands to the MPU-401 at port 330 (it doesn't support SB MIDI, does it ?)..

I still hope that someone else with a better equipment will take over and do some recordings
with the MT-32 -or even better- the LAPC-I..

See here for why this demo doesn't run on a Pentium: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/watcom-win386/

Hint: Its a speed sensitive library, that was eventually patched.

GREAT!!! thanks so much! Jo22!!! and thanks for illustrating in both photos + sound.. this is fantastic!!!
i will be getting it working myself soon hopefully!!!!!!

thanks for cheking this out.. hopefully this post can inspire some others to check it outaswell..
its a piece of music production IBM/PC history here

does that error message mean it requires a 386???
i originally tried to run it on a pentium III and it did NOT work.
then i downgraded that machine to a pII and it still didnt work

i never tried it on a 486 or 386 yet

ok thats interesting.. maybe it might work then if i tried it again on my PII 266mhz???

thats kind of why i went out of my way to remove the PIII 700mhz cpu i had orginally in my Abit BE6 mobo
to install the PII 266mhz i got off ebay - to try and avoid a crazy insane zooming speed i was having in Cubase in windows 3.1
similar "cpu is too fast" type scenario

it might have been the PIII - 1.4ghz machine i tried it on that didnt work.. or a core 2duo or p4 system .. i cant remember

It works fine on a 486 DX4/100Mhz. Microsoft released a patch that should solve the problem as described in the OS/2 Museum post. Here is an archived link to the patch, try running it against the EXE

the PII 266 processor i used was released in spring 1998 or something..
so thats like 5 years after this program was put out, so thats still a significant change in cpu power
maybe it might work out better to use this program on a 486 chip or earlier as those chips
were the current working cpu's back in 1993.. i remember i built computer systems in 1993
it was my first job away from high school, subsidized by my school, so id go to class in the morning
and then after lunch id go to work and build 486-dx2-66mhz tower + deskstops for the rest of the day till like after 6pm

anyway my memory is a bit foggy 🤣 consiering it was almost 30 years ago.. but i remember the first few pentium systems
we built was like WOW.. this is a 586!!! PENTIUM!
then funny enough i never got a pentium chip after that
i kept on with my 486 dx2 66mhz that i bought with my own cash
from working i kept that machine till about 1997 even!!
i think the petium systems were crazy expensive
or i just turned a blind eye to it and waited
untill the PII came out..
the PII 300 Mhz i think was my first pentium chip where i was like ok
i gotta upgrade my cpu.
the 486 dx2 66 did basically everything the pentium chips did.. just a bit slower
so there was no real reason for me to upgrade in my mind
