Found this mystery card while browsing ebay:

Looks like a sound card with audio jacks and volume control, but there's also a connector resembling a VGA one on the bracket. It also appears to have SCSI on-board. It has a YMZ263 chip, the same digital audio chip used on the AdLib Gold. It also has a OPL3 chip.

Any ideas? The only reference I could find is this: https://fccid.io/JDF-SOUNDMEDIA001 and there isn't really any information there except that it was registered with the FCC as a sound card.

I don't know anything about that card but I think it could still be a MIDI connector just with an unusual choice for the connector type. Maybe it even breaks out into a normal joystick port, but even if that's the case you'd probably never find the original breakout cable. The only chance would be if a pinout were found and you could make your own.

Also.. the FCC web site has Amazon affiliate links? That's hilarious. 😀

Um, no that's not the real FCC site. Why would a government agency use a .io domain? I know and use the real FCC site frequently (ham radio-related).

Absolutely no idea. Plug it into something and see if the OPL3 chip works!

Maybe it's some kind of cheap SB Pro II or 16 clone.

Could you post a picture of the front of the jacks?

I don't have the card, I just found the auction that lists it... no other pictures of the bracket.

It is without any doubt a soundcard.... There is a jumper "game" on it.
That special vga-look-a-like connector, might be a connector to hook up an external box of some sort.

It's a high density 15 port connector, so maybe some special type of game port breakout?

Interesting, the LMC835 is a stereo 7-band equalizer... sounds better that the standard bass/trebble controls on a regular SB.

But of course without tracking down some appropriate drivers, it's moot.

the TMC 950 is a very standard 8 bit isa scsi controller. There are 16 bit versions, but it was only for IRQ reasons. If I was engineering the card, for *insert stupid upper-management decision here* reason, to save space I can see myself using a svga connector instead of the standard d-sub 15. I would do my best to make it a 1-1 pinout. If they used a stupid pinout so you MUST buy their overpriced special cable because of *insert stupid upper-management decision here*. I would not be surprised at all.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Maybe it's an OEM version of an ATI Stereo FX card....but those cards didn't have that extra yamaha chip. Anyway, that is the card this one reminds me of most.

Nah, it's lacking all the chips needed for a video card.

it's just a yamaha-based sound card with OPL3 and scsi connector , one would need a port converter to plug a joystick...

That is also my guess. It looks like they had trouble fitting the volume knob and all the inputs-outputs on the back, so they used a smaller VGA-style connector rather than the regular 15-pin D-sub connector for the joystick/gameport. The card probably came with a simple converter back to regular 15-pin.

I was referring to ATi's stand alone soundcard, not the one with video...I think the one you have in mind is the VGA Stereo FX.

So are there other cards based on this Yamaha chip? This is the first one I've seen that predates the YMF-71x series. I wonder if it's SB Pro and WSS compatible. No mention at all in the datasheet. Or is it just a codec like on those OPTi based cards?

the datasheet states that all you need to build a soundcard is this IC and OPL2 or OPL3 (well you also need glue logic and opamps - that goes without saying 🤣 ) , it offers playback/recording/uart midi and joystick functions... most likely it's a SB Pro compatible chipset as well...
