I bought a Quadro FX 3000G for my Win98SE PC and it is really loud. It's NOS, so there's no problem with the fan. I've installed nVidia drivers but there's no option to limit the fan speed. I've never owned an FX when it was new (had a Radeon 9800 Pro) so I don't really know what tools people used to silence it - anyone knows some?

I put one of the $5 Chinese Zalman VF700 knockoffs on my 5900 Ultra. More than.adequate. Can be found on eBay.

Can't hear these running.

Unfortunately the 3000G look like this: Re: Bought these (retro) hardware today
It seems I have to find another GeForce FX and buy a better cooler. As for the Arctic NV4, I liked their coolers - had one on my Radeon 9800 Pro, worked great.

Yeah I can't see how you could mount any aftermarket coolers to that card considering it appears to have two PCBs and a heatsink mount is actually overlapped.

If it's not getting too hot you might try soldering one 1w resistor of value around 40 ohms or two regular resistors in parallel around 80 ohms each in series to the cable of the fan. That's not really the best method of regulating the fan speed because it limits the current and not the voltage, but almost all the fans I use have such mod. But that is applicable only to the hardware which doesn't overheat and requires very little airflow (i use that mainly on socket 3 and 7 coolers).

PWM is the best way to regulate speed for a DC fan. Controllers are cheap and plentiful on eBay -- some including on board temperature monitoring.
