Hey guys, can anyone point me in a direction for a nice tried and true QUIET power supply for PII/PIII boards? i.e. 24pin connector etc. with enough juice to support everything. I don't want any helicopter sounding power supplies or anything super loud, which I have one in my PII system right now and it's obnoxious because it has dual fans.

I am really happy with my Antech 430W. Pretty shure it is an "Antech Eartwatts (or something) 430W".
Only thing that is missing, is -5volt rail, so it is in my Socket 370 without any ISA slots.

Wow, that's some great deals! You don't see brand new 5V heavy quality PSU:s listed every day either.

Their international shipping rates kind of kills it for me though 😒

Are any of those for use with ISA slot boards as well? I have ISA slots on both boards to support older soundcards, i.e. gravis ultrasound

Depends on what you wish to have in the ISA Slot.
If the card is an AWE64, then having no -5volt is of no consern. I mentioned it, just in case you want something like a Roland midi Interface card or something like that.

Going onto eBay, searching for "antec power supply" gives a lot of -5volt PSU's. How loud they are, I have no clue on.
I just looked at the pictures of them, and saw that white wire.

What ISA cards are you going to use in the computer?

Some of the cards known to require -5V are the Sound Blaster 2, Roland LAPC-I and PAS 16. The PAS16 works, but speech can run at a higher speed without -5V.

The vast majority of ISA cards will work just fine with a modern PSU 😀

I use two brands, Corsair and FSP. Corsair has nicer cables and I like how they connect the two 4 pin plugs and the ATX plugs together.

I just bought a 10 pack of Seasonic 550HT 80plus units for only $135 shipped on eBay. I'm not sure where they come from but I've bought probably a dozen similar 350W units and they always look brand new, with no dust at all. Not only do they have plenty of power for a modern gaming system, they have 30a on the 5v real which is quite rare these days and will be very handy for my older systems.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

Just a quick question on the minus 5 volt thing.
Can this somehow be applied to generate -5volt?

EDIT:
Did not see that "200ma"..... Found something else, that might work.

Looks like their price went up... it was $125+$15 but I gave a lowball offer and the first counteroffer they gave me was $120 +$15 just a few days ago.

The only complaints I can find about this PSU are that they sometimes develop a click due to the fan hitting something inside, which is an easy fix. I have not personally used this model myself yet though. I've used several of the 350 watt models (ET, ES, etc.) some 80Plus some 80Plus Bronze and have yet to have one problem after 3-4 years of buying them as "pulls from working systems" on eBay. Also have never seen a single speck of dust inside or outside.

Thanks...
Though one question remains. Does negative 12 volt rail provide enough amp to power the negative 500ma output?
On my Antec, I can draw up to 800ma. And if I use this to generate negative 5volt, does that not leave too little left on the negative 12volt?
In other words, will it not bring me in trouble down the road?

The other option is to source a buck-boost converter. That will source from a +5V or +12V rail and offer stable inverted polarity output, either greater or less than the input voltage.

Just wanted to report, I got my lot of 10 Seasonic 550HT power supplies from eBay (seller cloudninjas) today, and I'm pleased to say that they turned out to be the later BLACK version of the 550HT, with sleeved cabling, 80Plus (standard) certified, a bunch of extra wire adapters connected to each one (probably left over from case lighting and fans). All except for one test out OK with my PSU tester. The one is reporting PG (power good) as "high", which I don't believe is much of a problem unless it ends up not working in a system, as the voltages are all fine. I've had other units that did this and worked fine for years... it just depends on the system and how far off the PG delay is.

So, yeah... its this PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?It … N82E16817151027
(slight difference in labeling... this one actually has an 80Plus and several other certification logos on it... and it is a BHT556FS3LW, vs the FS3JW at newegg)

10 of them for $135 shipped.

And... *drumroll*... they're definitely brand new. They have scrapes from being inserted into a case, but they smell like brand new electronics\plastic and have no dust on the fans or internals. They've never been used. 😀

A minor update for those interested in this subject.

I decided to upgrade one of my favorite computers with one of these power supplies. It is my old gaming system from 2003... Abit NF7-S 2.0, Athlon XP 1700+ (was at 2.1Ghz but the CMOS battery died and I can't remember the settings!), 2GB DDR-400, 7600GS AGP 8x (later addition), etc.

With the old-school, totally inefficient (and with almost no certifications on it) Antec PP-303XP 300W PSU, it was pulling around 131W from the wall while idling at the desktop. Despite nearly doubling the rated capacity of the power supply by installing a 550W Seasonic, it still managed to drop the idle power consumption a few watts to around 128. This doesn't seem like a big deal, but it should give others an idea of what to expect when using a hugely over powered PSU on an older system. The upgrade in efficiency seems to win out over the drop in percentage of system load (around 43% load on the Antec 300W, to around 23% load with the Seasonic 550W).

So, don't be too concerned about losses in efficiency. To get that solid 30A on the +5v rail, its certainly worth it over just using an old, likely less reliable model.
