Hi!

I'm trying to get a D-Link DFE-670TXD PCMCIA network card to work on my old HP Omnibook 425 laptop. The computer has Card and Socket Services version 1.08. But the drivers complain that I need v2.0 or 2.1.

I've never used PCMCIA on a DOS laptop so I'm kind of clueless as to what to do next. Google hasn't been helpful either. Any ideas?

Ask hardware questioons in Marvin. This forum is for DOS games on modern systems.

sorry, that card won't work, and you can't use a newer version of Card&Socket Services in the Omnibook.
You need to find a card that supports the HP palmtop series which use a similar pcmcia chipset and C&S Services as the Omnibook.
Such cards include the the Socket EA+, Accton 2216 and maybe the Netgear FA411.
Another way is to use a parallel ethernet adapter.

Ah, too bad. I have none of those at home and although the Netgear is available on ebay it does lack a dongle. I can always rig a serial cable to a PC - but that solution is pretty cumbersome and I'd hoped to avoid it.

Out of curiosity, why won't it work? It's software, right? Why not simply install a newer version?

Attached are the OmniBook 600CT CardSoft and CardView folders. Not sure if these are useful. I rescued the folders from a defective drive, so something might be missing.

The chipset they used either predates or doesn't conform to the standard, cards had to be designed on purpose for the OmniBook series.
You can run the utility tellme.com to see what chipset it detects:
Re: PCMCIA Sound Cards
Could you list the content of the Cardwoft folder from your 425?
You can always try Cardware 7 from http://www.tssc.de/, it supports a VLSI pcmcia chipset, but maybe not your model.

I couldn't find the folder. Where is it supposed to be?

The only relevant part I found was in CONFIG.SYS:

rem Install OBCIC, the Omnibook PCMCIA modem card recognizer TSR, with
rem generic modem recognition turned on.
rem Make sure OBCIC is installed after OBMGM...

install=d:\omnibook\obcic.exe /GEN 1

Tellme output:

The system then halts execution and even CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work. I had to press the reset button and remove the relevant parts from CONFIG.SYS.

Attempting to install Cardware 7: the setup program asks for a platform but the OB425 isn't listed and I couldn't find the "Controller Autodetect" option that the setup program recommended. Is my controller PCIC or TCIC? I tried to proceed anyway but when asked to select PCIC/TCIC/TACT Socket Services I didn't know what to pick. So I let the default be and pushed on.

Perhaps I need to choose different settings?

Huh. On a whim I tried running dfe670pd.com and it actually appears to have loaded. This despite all the errors above. Did Cardware 7 actually do something helpful?

I checked the Omnibook archive http://omnibooks.info/archive/, but I didn't see anything Omnibook 425 PCMCIA related there.

Omnibook PCMCIA modem card recognizer TSR

That doesn't look hopeful. You would expect something more universal, not modem card specific. Looks like lolo799 is right about the early Omnibooks.

I even installed dos 6.22 and windows 3.11 in a virtual machine simply to make sure I was doing things properly. It worked there, but not in the Omnibook. 🙁

So the adapter defaults to 0x0300 and IRQ = 11. Is there perhaps a conflict? I am uncertain.

E000:0004 ?7400000000000000000000000IBM VGA Compatible BIOS. 5

I don't know why MSD got the date and time wrong. I checked the settings and they are correct. I also sent off an e-mail to "support@tscc.de", perhaps they can offer some insight.

I attempted to check if the NIC works on another computer but found out that my 2008 ASUS has an incompatible ExpressCard slot. So I went down to the basement and started digging. Aside from a remarkable number of ISA cards and old SIMM memory, I found my old P2 laptop with the busted screen that I used as a server for a while. Unfortunately when connected to power the external VGA output does not display any video nor can I hear any POST beep. 🙁

You can remove the following lines from your config.sys:
DEVICEHIGH = C:\CARDWARE\PCATA.EXE
DEVICEHIGH = C:\CARDWARE\PCSRAM.EXE
DEVICEHIGH = C:\CARDWARE\PCFLASH.EXE
DEVICEHIGH = C:\CARDWARE\PCDISK.EXE
Try the other Socket drivers from cardware, sstact.exe and sstcit.exe instead of sspcic.exe.

You can also try those versions of ssvlsi.exe, instead of obss.exe:

No joy for sspcic, sstcic, or sstact.

ssvlsi no. 1 outputed:

SystemSoft Socket Services 2.1 VL82C146 Version 1.01 (2173-06)
Copyright 1993-1994 SystemSoft Corporation. All rights Reserved

VL82C146 PCMCIA adapter not found
SystemSoft VL82C146 Socket Services not installed

ssvlsi no. 2 outputted:

SystemSoft Socket Services 2.1 VL82C146 Version 1.01 (2243-08)
Copyright 1993-1994 SystemSoft Corporation. All rights Reserved

VL82C146 PCMCIA adapter not found
SystemSoft VL82C146 Socket Services not installed

There was only a slight difference in the numbers after the version number. I also tried every ss* in both folders. sscirrus and ssvadem run without complaint, but regrettably do not appear to work. Non-standard hardware really is a pain. Thank you for trying though.

Found an interesting link: http://www.vcfed.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-38300.html

It didn't work, but the LXCIC output:

C:\NIC\LXCIC\LXCIC.COM

LXCIC V2.1 (c) 99 Stefan Peichl, Heidelberg
-------------------------------------------
D-Link DFE-670TXD PC Card
ADR=0300 COR=41 FCSR=20 BASE=0200 ID=06
SocketService I/O enabled

Interesting that it recognized it...
