I've got an ABIT BE6 board in my 98 computer and it has this weird error that pops up and is apparently unavoidable.

"CPU is unworkable and has been changed. Please recheck - CPU SOFT MENU"

I've replaced the battery and cleared the CMOS already multiple times. The error doesn't go away.

The Pentium III 600E/256/100 in it defaults to the lowest clock speed, 400E, when the computer is turned on. Whatever settings you save in the CPU SOFT MENU are cleared and reset back to the lowest setting again every time the PC is started up. It's not the CMOS chip, though, since it saves everything else, and the date and time are still correct.

A temporarily problem solver I've used right now is to make the BIOS bypass all errors, keeping the boot process uninterrupted, but changing the speed to 600 every time is pretty annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you set the cpu setting in the bios right?
Also try flashing the newest bios on the board.

It could also be the caps, I believe that most BE6 boards used crummy caps, might not be stable at full speed so its down clocking the cpu to keep it stable, try setfsb after windows boots up to change the cpu speed and be sure to check the caps.

Funny I just worked with that same board today 😀

- Check the CMOS battery with a volt meter
- Check the position of the CMOS clear jumper

Also what BIOS do you have? SS is the latest version I believe.

I second the capa, not sure what brand the BE6 uses but they are most likely bad. The Jacksons on the VP6 go bad without any physical sign in my experience.

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

I believe there is option in the Soft menu (don't remember the exact name) that can deactivate this annoying message. Also it might help to set CPU as manual (6x100 MHz), not the predefined 600 MHz preset.

Necro'ing this thread, please forgive 😵

Out of the blue, it's defaulting to 600E now. Weird..I don't remember modding the board or anything.

Problem solved, I guess? Time to overclock 😁

I had the same problem with my old BH6 when I brought it out of retirement, on exactly the same CPU as you. I solved it by flashing the latest BIOS. I think. Or maybe it solved itself, like yours, and it was just a coincidence. Who knows, right? YOLO. 😁

SS is the latest BIOS version I believe. Just in case, I've attached it.

How are you finding the board? I've been using for a benchmarking marathon, still got work ahead, and it's been fantastic.

Alright! Got the Pentium 3 over clocked to about 688 MHz (bios lists it as 650). Anything over this caused it to not post.

Happy new year Phil! 😁

I somehow keep mixing up certain model numbers, even when already having been corrected by multiple persons 😵

Hmm, the problem is back. Can still OC to 688 (650 in BIOS) but it defaults every time again.

Will probably recap with Japanese caps sometime.

Just to make sure, by "make the BIOS bypass all errors", you mean disabling the Speed Error Hold setting in the CPU soft menu, and not changing the Halt On setting? Had to do that to get my BH6 to accept a PIII 1.1GHz, it behaved just like your board before if I remember it right.

Also, could you post your CPU soft menu settings?

I actually just saw that speed error hold setting and disabled it.
