I have two dos drivers I am hunting and google searches are not coming up with anything definitive. From this link

https://web.archive.org/web/20000313020622/ht … b55/PB55ovw.asp

I need cache32.com for the extra cache memory and WD76MM.SYS for EMS memory. It says something about the files being on a packard bell diagnostic disk, but I don't know where I might find these two programs.

Thanks for any leads or if someone has these stashed away somewhere..

Looks promising for cache32.com:
http://www.mmnt.net/db/0/0/ftp.onsitenj.com/d … /packard%20bell
password given at http://onsitenj.com/ftp.htm doesn't work tho, error 530: User cannot log in.
Still, they might be worth reaching out to, if there's no other recourse.

Also:
"the CACHE32.COM program must be run to activate the cache on BIOS versions 1.10.14 and under." - which is probably a typo for "1.01.14 and under".
The latest BIOS that website mentions is "1.01.17".
So you might not need cache32.com if you have the latest BIOS?

Interestingly there's an archive of the first website you mentioned here: http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/pb/mb/55.htm

Found 2000 archive of their support website:
https://web.archive.org/web/20000303032218/ht … rchive.asp?bios
they mentioned cache32.com as available here:
ftp://ftp.packardbell.com/pub/archive/bios/cache32.com

Searching FTP sites might be a good idea, including those archived by archive.org: https://archive.org/details/ftpsites
or the search engines: Re: Preservation of historical ftp site content
[EDIT] I tried the search engines (but not archive.org) - they didn't turn up anything else useful.

Thanks Stiletto for the leads. Awesome work indeed. I contacted the onsitenj site to inquire about that driver and will wait to hear back from them. As far as my BIOS version this is gonna sound silly, but I can't find anything that doesn't just say BIOS 1.01. MSD reports that the BIOS date is 4/19/90 but still states it as 1.01.

Still no luck on finding the cache32.com file but I did end up finding the EMS driver for this machine that does work. I posted it just incase anyone else needs it.

The EMS driver I posted that worked wasn't specifically branded as a packard bell driver, just the right driver that worked I guess. I think I got it from one of the archives on this site http://ibm-pc.org/drivers/unsorted/memory-1/memory-1.htm Don't ususally get that lucky, but it gets better..

The owner of the onsitenj site replied to my email and he still had the cache32.com file. He put it up so I could download it. But I am not sure how to use it. Everytime I run the cache32 file the computer instantly locks up. I don't know if that means I don't actually need the file, or if it is something else, but I have tried a clean boot with no config.sys/autoexec.bat and it still hangs once you run it. Nonetheless if anyone else is looking for the file here is is, just rename it back to COM from TXT

Glad to hear onesitenj.com came through. I know some people who'd be happy to archive their FTP if they could make it available again. 😀

My hope is what you said: that your BIOS is newer (1.01.15, 1.01.16, 1.01.17, followed by 1.01 we hope?) and you don't need the utility 😀

Well an update, i got a different cache chip (same model) and now when I run cache32 it doesn't lock up, however msd (ver 2.00 and 2.11) for one and other diagnostic type programs will lock when checking the system. I was running cachchk7 to verify cache size and it locks up too. They run fine if I don't envoke cache32.com. I hunted down an older version of cachchk4 and it doesn't lock up and does show 32K of cache after running cache32.com. If I don't run the cache32.com it still shows 16K so this BIOS does need the extra COM file loaded.
