Want to run gzdoom on a slow system (300mhz) just to see how much better performance I can get compared to a wad in zdoom. On the other hand, does anyone know of gzdoom versions that support opengl 1.x?

It depends on the drivers for your gfx and the OS in question. Anything more than OpenGL 1.2 has to be provided by the GL implementation supplied in the display drivers. XP definately, ME probably if the drivers are good for card you have.

i suspect it would be GLSL introduction for the OpenGL2.x requirement. If the app developer was clever enough and didn't just use another third party lib like glew, and rely on shaders, there may be a OpenGL1.2 code path within the program and so apps may be backwards compatible, just without pretty effects o.0
