I have an S3 Trio64V+ with 2MB RAM (1MB o/b, 1MB socketed) and an S3 Trio64V2/DX with 1MB Ram (1MB socketed, 2 sockets empty for 1MB more). I want to move the 1MB chips from the V+ to the V2/DX (under the assumption that the latter is a better card overall).

Is there a specific tool for this? Things I tried to DIY with paperclips and whatnot have failed and I really don't want to try to lever them out and break the sockets..

Just use a very small flat head screwdriver. As long as you're careful everything should be okay.

You'll get faster at it the more you do it.

I use a small change-able head screwdriver for this task. The heads that resemble toothpicks... two of them, at both ends of the socket.

Using care, pry the chip out using equal force each side... should pop out no problem.

Get one of these dirt cheap thingies:

And while you're at it, one of these for those pesky ROM chips:

I ended up getting 5 of the chips for around 8 bucks, and both types of extractors because I need them when dealing with Amigas anyway. 😀
