Hi!
Because of my recent K6 build I've got interested in retro pcs again.

I have Abit BX6 mobo was behaving strangely from the day I bought it. Basically it can boot only with one CPU: sloted Pentium III 933. Apart from this one, I tried:
Celeron 300A
Celeron 333
Pentium II 350
Pentium 500E with MS-6905 adapter
... And few more with fsb ranging from fsb 66 to 133 with 0.25 and 0.18 models. What bugs me is that board remains dead with any CPU, but runs nicely with quite demanding one (fsb 133, 1,7V). I have installed few oses and used it for some time without a issue.

Had anyone encountered such a problem? Board has nice looking caps, although they were never replaced.

If I'm not mistaken, ABIT loved using Jackon caps so you might want to replace them as soon as possible. They my actually be bad without visible signs. I had some G-Luxon caps on a MB from a PC someone threw away - no wonder why, the board wouldn't POST. I replaced them with cherry picked Teapo caps and it came back to life.

All in all, you might want to replace the caps on the BX6 with good caps, like Nichicon,Rubycon,Sanyo,United Chemicon and Panasonic.

NOW THIS IS WHAT I LIKE TO SEE! Someone that actually listens to people that are in the know. I have read countless posts from people not only from this forum but from many, many others over the years that complain of their computers not booting, not running for more than a minute, shutting down or restarting randomly, and so on. Then when someone suggests bad caps needing to be replaced either in the mobo or the psu that can not even power a bathroom night light, they turn a deaf ear and ignore good advice. At least that did not happen here.

If the truth hurts, tough shit.

Caps are first suspect with such symptoms, but it was strange. Why would only this particular CPU work? And it was 100% stable 😀

What were the original brand of caps on the mobo and what did you replace them with?

They were standard Abit ones branded Jackcon. I replaced them with Jamicon Low ESR 105*C caps.

Jamicon are midrange at best. I encourage you to source known good caps where possible.

I am aware that Jamicon aren't best, but apparently I wasn't able to source better ones locally. Now I am preparing to recap other components and here is what I came up with:

Fair use/fair dealing exception

I probably won't buy two capacitors marked red as they are pricey and don't even match parameters of what is needed. I will try to source them from some dead PSU.

Any comments about my picks? Almost all of those are thicker and taller than the ones used on Abit board, so I will need to place some of them on side (those between AGP and PCI ports).

The one you've marked in red will be the primary bulk cap. You probably won't have to replace it as it generally experiences the least amount of stress, although doing so is certainly not a problem. Also, the bulk caps will be quite tolerant, so you can use a longer life (Japanese/known good) capacitor with higher ESR than the Nichicon without issue if it saves on budget.

Do you have information on the capacitors originally or currently installed? You might be able to further fine tune the matches based on the specs of the original parts.

I managed to dig Nichicon 1000/200V caps from dead laboratory equipment, so I will have that covered 😀

I have original caps right next to me. They are branded Fuhjyyu in case of Antec power supply and Jackcon on Abit board. Main problem is their size - Antec's caps are very thin in diameter and Abit ones are lower than usual.

I think that was part of why those Fughyuu's die so quickly in the Antec supplies. They are not only defective anyway but they are super thin and usually packed tight against other components, so they heat up really bad and pop sooner.
