many dos games required 386 or newer cpus, not because they used 32bit instructions, but because they used 32bit dos extenders to address larger ram than 640kb.
are there any dos games that would run on 286, while making use of xms(over 1mb)?

Wolfenstein 3D perhaps? I'm speaking under correction.
I do recall that most of the early Sierra SCI based games had the option to make use of extended or expanded memory.

However, by the time that games had to use DOS extenders, a 386 CPU was kind of the minimum that was required to play those type of games.

I seem to recall some versions of MS Flight Simulator used it, maybe even required it. Prior to version 5 I suspect but can't remember which specifically.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.
