I just stumbled across the manual of the HP Vectra 486N series and noticed, that you can upgrade the internal 512 KB video RAM to 1 MB with these exotic looking modules.

Does anyone know, where to get them? I have never seen one of them in the wild and would love to get more information.

Um, not sure, but judging by the odd spacing of the pins, that memory looks a bit like Zip RAM to me.
That memory was also used on ISA or rather VLB graphics cards, I believe..

Yeah was going to say ZIP RAM, probably something like this:

Not sure where you'd find the specs of the RAM you need though ... I know my 286 laptop has the chip code and speed for ZIP chips silkscreened next to the sockets

I upgraded my hp vectra 486/33vl with these so I guess it's close enough to yours. Mine uses "half byte" modules so I needed 4 256k*4bit chips to get 512KiloBYTE
