Hi all...
I just recently got to the point of beginning to test this Controller. And all I know about it, is that it's an Caching IDE ISA Controller from Promise. I have no idea on what the model name is, and I can't search for documentation on it. Total hardware 99 does not seem to have any entry under the name "Promise" for this card. Wich sucks a bit.

The issue that I have, is that the IDE port of this card seems to be dead. If the card is supposed to show some kind of BIOS during post of the machine, then this card does not even do that. (Though the Floppy controller on the card is working, so something is working on this card)

I have tried to disable and enable all HDD controller settings in the BIOS and disable enable all shadow memory.
I have tried to swap the sim modules around, and I have tried other modules.
I have tried the harddrive that is working with a VLB controller in the machine, and I have tried an old 540mb and a CF card.

Nothing seems to be working for me. Though the activity led on the CF adaptor is flashing faintly when detecting HDD in the BIOS.
This all tells me, that at least something is going on.

If someone here knows anything about the model number or have any info on settings, I would be happy.

It seems to be of the same family as mine. Let me see if I still have a photo of my box. It listed all options.

It's early 90s, "superIDE" but not very super, I'd be trying drives under 300MB on it. Also may not be ATAPI compliant so don't have any CD ROMS on the cable confusing things. Should have 2 1MB SIMMS installed, if those are 4MB or 256K then change them out for 1MBs. Part number is on the board 41209900

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Still no luck. 🙁 It kind of feels like the controller part is disabled or something, or I need to enter a specific key kombination, that are not displayed, in order to enter the BIOS on the card it self. Hmmmm....

That doesn't mean that they are correct... Link to the pictures of my original Promise box.

Hmmm.... Seems as the card I have, might be dead. 🙁
I even had a 256mb dom and a 32mb CF card hooked up on this thing.
Nothing that I have tried, have provided any positive results.

There are only two jumpers on the card, and as I can not find any info on them, I do not know what they are for.

Mine worked just fine with a 128MB DOM. Does it boot from the floppy? Mine came configured for 5,25" and it wouldn't boot properly. Inside the disk there was an utility that allowed to configure the card , change floppy type, enable or disable cache, etc.

Yup... Boots the first MS-Dos 6.22 install disk fine. I can start programs directly, and FDISK reports no drive (obviously)
Basically, there are a tool to set this card up?

Type of machine? I didn't have a good experience with Pentium motherboards.
386/486 is really the way to go with these cards.
Once you disable the onboard IDE (if you have any present) put the CHS by hand (type 47).

The testmachine is an 486dx2-80 on a VLB motherboard and 16mb of ram.
I think that I have found the correct drivers/tools online... Can you confirm if this might be the correct ones?

SUCCESSS....... Yippieee..... I tried the installation suite/tools that I found online, and tested the card with the tools.

Then wrote the exact drive parameters in the motherboard BIOS, by hand, although the motherboard can autodetect.
Then I rebooted and had contact with the harddrive (16gb Seagate) and I had contact with the Conner (540mb) that I have.
I had contact with two different CF cards the same way... One is a 512mb and the other is a 32mb.

This is great... It just need a very specific way of installing a harddrive on.
A way of installing that I have not seen before. Nor ever tried.
This thing of manually having to enter the drive parameters when motherboard supports autodetecting.

I am not quite shure why this is. I think it is because the motherboard autodetect tool can not see through the 80186/Controller-BIOS.

I'm glad you got it working.

Thanks for the help. 😀 Now I really do not know were to use this thing. Yet I am really happy that this is working. Perhaps it will go in a ISA-Only 486-dx-33/ET-4000 system. It's a wonderfull card, yet I have not really exploited its useabillity as of now, in order to decide if I am going to keep it or sell.
