Here's something iv been noticing after running a few tests and playing a few 3d games on a DX2. It doesn't seem to be performing as well as other same spec DX2 machines iv seen.

The big example here would be Rise Of The Triad. That game runs slightly-dreadful at fullscreen \w statusbar and high detail. On the flip side though i swore iv seen videos online of people running DX2 setups with equal spec that handle the game on the same settings MUCH better.

My current setup is as follows:
486DX2-66
8mb ram
256K Cache
Data Expert EXP4044 motherboard
Tseng Labs ET4000AX 1Mb (ISA)
Generic Yamaha YMF719 Soundcard
-------------------------------------------
For research, i have run a few select benchmarks. These where run more then one time, from a clean bootdisk with nothing else loaded (no sound, etc)

-DOOM (full screen, high details test)- -Topbench- -3Dbench 1.0c-
FPS: 15.06 Score: 122 FPS: 28.6

CacheCHK confirms all 256k of cache present and functioning. All System-ID programs correctly list the processor as a 486DX-2 @ 66MHz.

I suppose those scores are OK for the type of system, but iv seen better. Seen some benchmarks put Doom at around 20 fps, 3DBench definitely has seen better on other DX2s, and as mentioned earlier, iv seen ROTT play better too.

Now the big question i have here is where the bottleneck is. Unless i'm just seeing things wrong.
I wouldn't normally put too much thought into that as 3D isn't why i initially build the machine, But i'd like to up-it to a DX4 for the extra power and i'd be more curious if i should throw that money first at a VLB video card.

That's assuming of course the ISA Tseng is causing a slight dip in performance (fair), but i'm not too sure yet.

The Tseng Labs ET4000AX ISA card is definitely your bottleneck.

I recently performed some benchmarks of my own and there was definitely a performance boost between my Tseng Labs ET4000AX ISA card and my Cirrus Logic CL-GD5422 VESA Local Bus card.
On my ET4000AX I get around 4000 chr/ms with Landmark 2.0 but, around 16000 chr/ms with my CL-GD5422.
Comparative results on other benchmarks were as follows:
3D Bench: 29.80 fps 49.00 fps
Doom: 15.05 fps 24.87 fps

If you also upgrade the CPU to a 486DX4 100 MHz, then you can expect your Doom performance to jump to over 30 fps (however, this is dependent on your individual hardware setup

Even Dx2-66 paired with an VLB card, will not play Doom butter smooth. It will still have a tiny bit of "drunken walk".
If I would have to set the bar for acceptable Doom gameplay, then at least Dx2-80 and CL-5428/29 or S3-805.

As other deep the culprit, I too say the ET-4000 ISA card.

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.
Those cakes make you sick....
