Here's the deal that I'm facing right now. I upgraded Windows 3.1 to Workgroups 3.11 with success and when the NIC drivers, as well as the TCP/IP drivers got installed, I cannot seem to get the NIC to work whatsoever. Windows would report that it cannot get anything from the DHCP server, and when I tried to change the port base I/O from 300h to 310h or something thereof (my SB16 CT2740's MPU-401 port is set to 300h since my Music Quest MPU-401 card uses 330h), it gives me two error codes: one is the card cannot be found or is not installed, and the other is a code error 58.

Do I need an MS-DOS program to change the base I/O for the NIC?

Possibly. It's needed to set up that rom socket, at least.

Drivers needed for 3Com EtherLink III 3C509B-TPO for my 486 system

Drivers: 3c90x.zip, 3c509.zip
3com User guide: 01n0500p.zip

That beeing said, my 3coms worked out-of-box under WfW 3.11 so far.
Perhaps I was just lucky, though, and the right settings were stored by a former owner.

Edit: Here's a video of a 386 PC w/ Etherlink III running WfW.

Edit: The tool is called "3c5x9cfg.exe". It's part of the Ether Disk, I believe.
If not, check http://files.mpoli.fi/hardware/NET/3COM/ .

Well, that worked very well. Now I can get an IP address on my computer. I had the program auto config the card, and I set up the card in Windows to use the Base I/O it was assigned to from the program, and violà.
