I was browsing UK based PC hardware store scan.co.uk and came across something neat. They're selling a barebones kit with a case and socket 754 motherboard for 23.99. The board has AGP and a VIA chipset with drivers available for Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP.

Sure, you'd have to go elsewhere for the CPU/RAM/etc. . . just thought it neat you could still buy something like this brand new. No idea how many they have in stock - might just be one that's been sat on the shelf for 15 years or so.

Wow that's super cheap. Probably make a decent XP system and the CPU+RAM would be super cheap on eBay. A suitably powerful AGP video card would be the most expensive part.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

Using the AGP slot and a compatible PCI sound card (like a SOLO 1), it would actually make a pretty great DOS machine. It can be downclocked as needed on the fly using A64LOWP from Falcosoft (of FSMP fame). Download the utility from the DOS software page.
