I've seen that Puppy Linux exists in different version based on different sources (Ubuntu etc..). Considering that most versions didn't support i586 (no PAE, no CMOV cpu) which one will works?
Anyway after trying it still freeze even with IceWM. Problably it doesn't depend on the gui. I tried both ATi and Nvidia cards with free drivers and when it freeze everything is blocked, mouse, animated icons, etc..
It's going to be a challenge to use a modern distro with a modern UI. Older stuff will work better.
I forgot about DSL, http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html
i run slackware 14.2 with huge.s kernel, all binarys are compiled for i586.
It runs on K6-2 400Mhz, 256Mb RAM.
