Are all S939 Opterons locked?

Postby infiniteclouds » 2018-2-02 @ 19:19

Heya,

I'm currently using a 4000+ San Diego for my S939 and from what I'm reading the fastest single/dual core CPUs for this socket are actually the Opteron 156/190 respectively.... but are they locked? I know the FX-50s/60 are not.

Yes the Opterons are locked but like with (almost) all socket 939 CPUs lower multipliers are always available as long as your motherboard lets you change multiplier.

Not having the ability to choose higher multipliers than stock isn't much of an issue if your motherboard lets you change the bus speed. A good San Diego 4000+ will often do 3000+ MHz on a decent board like Asus or DFI nForce4.
Main PC: Dual Xeon X5690@4.6ghz, Evga - SR-2, 48gb memory, Intel X25-M g2 SSD and a Nvidia GTX 780 Ti.
Retro PC #3: K6-2 450@500mhz, PC-Chips m577, 256mb sdram, AWE64 and a Voodoo Banshee.

To add to that, the higher bus speed is going to net a lot more increase in performance than just raising the multiplier.

More so than overclocking -- I like the underclocking ability of my San Diego 4000+ Being able to bring it down to 800Mhz is very useful.

Not really, HyperTransport overclocking usually goes hand-in-hand with lowered bus multiplier. That's even slight downgrade in some cases.
