I'm ordering power supplies for my Tualatin builds and want to make sure I do not need a -5v rail since it opens up considerably my options for what to buy.

Motherboard: ASUS TUV4X and TUSCL2-C
CPU: SL6BY 1.4GHz P-III (for both)
GPU: Radeon 8500 and GeForce Ti 4600
Sound: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 SB0350 (for both)

I'm certain the mainboards don't require the -5v rail... but that's about it. Any insight on what the GPU or sound card might require? I'm having a hell of a time finding manuals for those.

Assuming I do not require the -5v rail for anything (which is my current assumption), am I basically free to use any ATX PSU with a 20 or 20+4 pin configuration? I am considering this for both of these builds: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?I … N82E16817139027

Hi Rob8086,

Nothing in those builds requires a -5V rail. Even if they did, an adapter which adds -5V is usually preferable to a PSU which has it built in due to the age.

The power supply will be fine. For most retro computers, any modem power supply will work, with the major exceptions being OEM branded motherboards wifh a different ATX pinout, boards and systems which require -5V (which is limited to a handful of motherboards and sound cards for the most part), and systems that require a particularly strong 5V rail like the late Athlon and Athlon XP Socket A systems.

That is massively reassuring, thank you. CX 500's are on the way, and now the waiting game can truly begin.

My only concern would be if the Ti 4600 needs a strong +5v rail or not. I couldn't really find anything conclusive when I looked it up.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

AGP can only provide up to 2A on the 5V rail, and neither the Geforce 4 or Radeon 8500 series cards have external power connectors. The Tualatin is also a very efficient processor. There should not be any issues.

Good to know about the AGP slot 5v limit.

I kept picturing the 4600 with an additional power connector... Derp. Yet another reason to lump the GF4 Ti series in with older cards. Probably the last top of the line card that was slot powered.

I still remember building my first XP-era machine... I was furiously confused when I couldn't get any video out of it on first boot. 😵
