Right, so I bought a Siemens-Nixdorf PCD-4ND, nice 486-based laptop. I have two batteries for it (one can go into the slot for floppy drive), both are pretty much dead.

That said, I have noticed that Jozef Bogin junior has managed to replace the cells inside and get it running:

(jump to Battery revamp section)

Has anyone here done it? I have a couple of very basic questions (apologies!):
- What cells should be bought instead of the original ones? And where from?
- Does connecting them require soldering?
- How do you even open a battery, so as not to break it?

I dont know the lappy in question ..but the fact that all the cells are in series but no balanced charge monitoring suggests they are most likely NiMh cells ..
as LiIon would need balanced charging.
I recently built a pack for a ToshibaT4900 which was also NiMh ...and not using the same capacity cells ..thus the internal windows charge montor was confused all the time .
For this reason the monitor was unreliable ..but it did charge and held a charge for around 1 hour 30 minutes.
Plus smaller cells made the unit a bit lighter.
🤣
good luck if you attempt a pack rebuild .
I have some cheapo LiIon cells on order from china and am going to attempt a balanced charge pack rebuild for a Dell lattitude D500 soon.
..even though these can still obtained relatively cheap (copies) ..
My motto ..if you dont try ..you dont achieve.
