Hiya I know this is my first post but have been using this site for a few years now finding that with a quick google search most of my troubles have been asked and solved already by someone else but hope someone can help with suggestions for Dallas chip replacements although not a question I've seen posted here before. I have built up a nice collection of eleven sbc`s and a few of the older one`s bios modules now need replacing and trouble is I have the soldering skills of an orangutan with a gas cutting torch, My preferred method would first be to ask someone to de-solder the old chips for me and put a socket in and to start with but place the old chips in the sockets so I don't forget which way they went or something stupid like that and later I would sort out some of the v3 replacements of Maeslin`s designs previously posted on this site.
I guess my question would be what kind of person/company could I take these to and get this done to a decent standard without much of a price tag or suffering much by the way of losses/mishaps, would it be worth considering a local console repair company and asking if they will do something out of the ordinary or aiming a bit higher in skill, Im probably wrong but the impression I get these days is if a whole circuit board cant be replaced most consumer places say just get a new one so soldering isn't really offered as a repair any more.

holy s**t, that was really hard to understand.

your best bet is to mod the dallas chip and put an external battery, since these chips have an internal battery.
it doesn't matter if you can get another chip because it very probably has the battery dead too.

it may be useful to make a -pin compatible- replacement with modern components and a replaceable battery, i'm a little surprised no one thought about that possibility before

New production Dallas chips can still be purchased through reputable sellers of components such as Digikey and Mouser and the like.

US $10 isnt a bad price either. https://www.digikey.com/products/en?keywords=ds12887
I buy some every few months, the oldest i had ever gotten were 9 months old based on the date code on them.

If you do desolder to replace or "fix" it, i definitely recommend putting one of these on the board:

Simple to cut off the unused pins of the socket and solder it to the board.

I used mouser for one of my single board computer backplanes and found their service to be very good and have had some of those sockets you mentioned for almost a year now (I'm bad with projects 🤣) so I can choose to replace with whichever method is best at the time, I just had no idea where to take the boards to get the old chips to removed and the sockets put in since I cant solder.

I have had a bit of a look in the local area for local repairs and didn't know weather or not to ask a console repair company if they could do something out of the ordinary by doing this work http://www.southampton-computers.co.uk/consol … southampton.php
or ask a company with higher skill level to do it for me that could cost a bit more http://www.trowtronics.com/
