Hello dear vogons, I'd like some advice about what hardware to put on my old pc, let's start with these, the ss7 computers are almost done, I have a couple of vx at mobo and a abit PX5, we will discuss later, the aim is to achieve good perforamance with the best compatibility, on these pc I will use windows 98SE and aim to play windows games and software:

Pc1:

Cpu: K6-III+/400ATZ v1.6 @ 500 v2.0

I would go for
voodoo 3 3500 - is very dos compatible, glide, great performance match
YMF719 - no sound blaster bugs, good OPL3, good dos compatibility

I would stick with the above for one pc, as that hardware is as good as it gets for that era of gaming. If you wanted to try later windows 98 games you could try a SB live and the 3D prophet 4500 in the other pc for newer game features

DOS/w98/XP | Core 2 Duo E4600 | Asus P5PE-VM | 512mb DDR400 | Ti4800SE | ForteMedia FM801

I suppose you can.. but it would really benifit from a much faster cpu in a windows build

I always thought to use the p3 build for the voodoo 5 5500, to be honest... Also reading the forum I discovered that some v3 can give issues to ss7 mb because Voodoo3 draws too much power and can fry the board.

About the sound card since I aim to use ss7 machines with windows 98, I think I'd go with live, even if they go with same name, one is an oem card I recently bought on ebay, while the other is the sb live I bought my self at the time.

Both the V3 and S3 AGP cards are excellent for DOS gaming. The S3 is fine for Windows 2D, but is best paired with a 3d accelerator card. From the PCI croud, the S3 and CL 5446 cards are excellent for DOS gaming.
