I did write another post about this but it was way too long and I thought nobody would read it!

I have a Yamaha YMF718-S soundcard. It works perfectly in my WinMe machine but I want to use it in my Win98 machine. That one picks it up and the drivers install properly but there is no sound.

That machine has had 2 different motherboards in it and a clean install of 98 and stil shows the same symptoms with the Yamaha card. It works perfectly with another ESS card I have.

I wanted to use the Yamaha in my Win98 machine so does any one have any idea why it would work in one system but not another even after a clean install and a replacement motherboard?

The S370 is a 440BX, the slot 1 I’m currently using is also a 440BX and the socket 7 board is a SiS 5598 - it doesn’t work in either of the latter two.

Would that card require -5v by any chance?
And one mobo provides it, but not the other? (5th pin from the top)

That particular card needs -5V and will not make any sound (except possibly some garbled noise at max levels) without -5V. I have added a regulator on my card to make it use -12V instead :

Thanks guys!! I just had a look at the PSUs and the one I’m using in the Win98 system doesn’t do -5v! The card you pictured is identical to mine except the wave table space is populated on yours.

I’ve got so much to learn about this old hardware it’s crazy, every time I think I’m getting good at it something like this crops up 🤣
