Hi All,

I have this laptop, and seeking for your advice on this.
It is currently running on WinXP.
It is a Pentium M 1.6Ghz SpeedStep, 1GB RAM, 40GB Internal.

The Battery is totally KO (EBAY not selling it)

I want to re-purpose this laptop... Here's my questions:-
1. Install Win98/DOS, get a PCMCIA Soundcard(hopefully ISA compatible, if any..)
a. Can Pentium M, be throttle down via Speedstep, so that I can play those OLD DOS games?
b. Can the Soundcard be detected in DOS, to play Duke3D or at least Ultima/Wing commander?

2. Install a Dedicated Server for Multiplayer games, over the internet.....
a. Steam games? Anyone?
b. http://www.kali.net , hosting over the internet?
c. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XLink_Kai how about Xlink kai?
d. http://www.classicgamingarena.com/help/cgaserver how about ?
e. Unreal and Unreal Tournament dedicated server over the internet? Any suggestion? Minecraft?
f. PVPGN? Battle.net?

3. Turn it into NAS Storage?
a. Should I buy 5-Bay USB 2.0 , and make it into a NAS Storage?

I seriously had no clue what to do with this laptop. I do not want to donate it, nor dispose it. Battery maybe dead. .but i don't mind making it a dedicated-server for something. Windows 7? (I already have a Linux laptop, so no point in doing that..)

What's your take on this? Please advice.. 😕 😕 😕

Pentium M can switch down to 6x multiplier, meaning either 600 or 800MHz depending on which FSB speed it uses. Still pretty fast for DOS games.

What video/chipset does it use? Does it have 1GHz ethernet built in?

If you install win98 you might need to do some tweaking or reduce the amount of installed RAM. Sometimes win98 has problems with more than 512MB (although it works for me on my Athlon XP with 1GB)

Pentium M laptops are too new to have sound drivers for MS-DOS... they all have integrated Realtek or Conexant chips.

variant on the NAS idea, For a while I had an old laptop hooked up to USB 1TB drive which was on the same switch as my xbox which acted as my media centre, as wifi wasn't cutting it and everything else was other side of the room.
or you could do like phil did and turn it into a external midi device

Yeah... I think so too... and it addition , If I get a PCMCIA-soundcard, it won't guarantee me any success of DOS compatilbility... 😒
oh well... 😵
