So OPL2 requires long delays between writes, but is this true for OPL3 devices working in OPL2 mode? I have a motherboard with onboard sound, CMI8330, and Populous and Adtracker II both make hideous noise unless I turn the 8bit I/O Recovery all the way up to '8', whereas The Incredible Machine can work with that setting at '1'. I have noticed this with other sound cards, YMF-262 and otherwise.

OPL3 still requires delays but they're many times shorter than what OPL2 requires. Clone chips may have their own special requiremens.

It isn't software based and all hardware is subject to access limitations in some way, just some implementations can hide them such as use of FIFOs.
