I recently built a P!!! 1.0Ghz s370 retro gaming system and i've decided to do some experimenting by temporarily downgrading to a P!!! 500E/256/100fsb coppermine cpu to play just a handfull of DOS and WIN98 games only, im currently using a GF3 64mb agp4x videocard, its a wee bit overkill IMO... so what would be a more fitting choice?

Feel free to suggest otherwise, and these are videocards i have in my possesion... Voodoo3 2000 agp2x, GF2 mx400 agp4x, GF2 Ti agp4x, Quadro2 Pro agp4x and a GF4 mx460 agp4x.

Current System:
CPU - Intel 1.0Ghz 133fsb Coppermine
MOBO - Intel D815BN s370 mATX
MEM - Kingston 2X256mb pc133 cl3
HARD DRIVE - WD Caviar 20gb pata 7200rpm
VIDEOCARD - Abit Siluro GF3 64mb AGP4x
SOUNDCARD - HP Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 128 ES1373 CT5801
POWER SUPPLY - Enermax 420w EG425P-VE
Dell DVDrom - Dell 3.5'' floppy drive
Windows98se

Pentium3 1400s/ Asus Tusl2-c / Kingston 512mb pc133 cl2 / WD 20gb 7200rpm / GeForce3 Ti-500 64mb / Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 SB0100 / 16x dvdrom / 3.5 Floppy / Enermax 420w / Win98se

I'd say gf2 Ti or the gf4 mx460, so you can crank up the resolution and details a bit, or GF2 mx400 if you feel like replaying the stage of your life where you take a couple year old computer and chuck a new cheap video card in it to give it a bit more life (I've done this a few times when I was younger)

Voodoo 3 is very compatible and nice for extremely old 3d games, but 1999 was about the turning point where things were becoming a lot less about the voodoo and it's glide library and more about directx and opengl, which the nvidia cards are much better at.

Thanks for the replies...

If i really wanted to go period correct with this, since the 500Mhz cpu came out in late 1999, i would have to go with either the Voodoo3 2000 agp or a GF2 GTS, of which i dont have, so the next logical step is to use the GF2 Ti, or max it out with the GF4 MX460?

Test with the Voodoo, and then with the GF2-ti. Then choose what you personally prefer.

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.
Those cakes make you sick....

I had too much trouble getting the voodoo3 2000 agp card installed with this motherboard... works great duing the OS install, but then sometimes the screen would go black when trying to access the hdd or just by opening the optical drive, like a glitch or something would cause the signal loss, but the monitor was still powered on right after the WIN98 install, and even before any of the chipset and other associated drivers were installed, i also tried with power options off and on in BIOS and in windows, no luck.

I had this videocard working properly in an old slot1 motherboard with an agp2x slot system a few months back to make sure it working correctly because i bought it used from ebay, but the 500mhz cpu works without issue... so with this minor set back, im looking at putting back the 1.0Ghz/133fsb cpu, 2x256mb pc133 memory and the GF3 64mb videocard like the retro powerhouse it was and call it even.

Change of pace... i recently downdraged a WIN98se P200mhz socket7 system to replicate an intel 486 DX4-100Mhz DOS6.22 system i had back in '96, im currently using a Cirrus Logic GD5434 1mb video card, shall i keep it or go with a Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 4mb PCI video card, but would the the diamond card be a waste for strictly DOS gaming, or will it be better suited for WIN95 gaming?

The Stealth 3D is a great card and you can use that machine for both DOS and 95 games.

The Quadro2 Pro which you have is in fact between GF2GTS and GF2 Ti.

I/O, I/O,
It's off to disk I go,
With a bit and a byte
And a read and a write,
I/O, I/O

I was thinking the same thing... i just havent used WIN95 in forever, i'll give it a whirl after i receive the stealth 3d card, i should have it by this friday from ebay, picked it up for $23 shipped.

I would figure more along the lines of the GF2-Ti card... it has the same exact core and mem speeds, i have OC'd it to Ulra speeds, runs like a top, no issues whatso ever.
