I am looking at a bus mouse plug. Below, the x character represents a pin on the plug

X xx
xxxx
xx

There are 3 rows of pins. For the top row, where there are 3 pins, what does the pin on the left do? I have indicated this pin as an uppercase X. Is it for button 1 or for button 2? If it's for button 2, when using a bus mouse, is button 2 used much, and if it is, what for?

Thanks a lot for any info about this.

big X is the mouse button 2.

Thanks very much feipoa! It's interesting that different drivers appear to either utilise the middle button, or not. Is that the case? And does the hardware (what you plug the mouse in to) also have a bearing on how different drivers handle the middle button? Thanks.

The Microsoft InPort ISA card works with the InPort drivers, while the Logitech ISA card works with logitech drivers. If both sets of drivers contain support for the middle button, it will work, since both ISA cards support the middle button. It seems that a Logitech mouse can also work with the InPort ISA card, but the middle button didn't work. I don't have proper InPort drivers though, so that may be why.
