I have a motherboard with one of the built in batteries inside a real time chip I have the "Dallas DS12887A Real Time" chip and I have seen a video with one that looks very much the same

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdlSfqto_0o

the pins are the same so is the above what I should shoot for? In another video they used a rechargeable 3v battery so im not sure which way to go, non rechargeable or rechargeable and should I remove some of the top of the chip to remove the old battery or just leave it in?

It's far easier just to install a DIP socket on the motherboard so you can either swap RTC's quickly, or mod the old RTC -- if you screw up you can just pop in a new one. Plus with a DIP socket, it will sell easier since buyers look for things like that instead of ghetto hacks. 🤣

Yes wiretap that is my thoughts too exactly and luckily the motherboard already has a DIP socket but I read or watched a video that says if you buy a new RTC with a battery there is no telling if its a good one or not and might only last for a short time I dont remember if the source was talking about ebay or some other place thats why I would like to try making it last for a long time with a battery clip that attaches to the RTC. If I go with the route of replacing the RTC does someone know of a place to get one that is reputable online?

If you live in the US, Mouser has them.

I got one from there and it was only a few months old. (They have a date code on them.)
Maxim makes the dallas RTCs now and they are the same. They even say dallas on them.
