My main PC is a desktop system (Core i7-5820K, 32GB of RAM, 2TB of SSD - 1 SATA, 1 NVMe, GeForce GTX 980Ti) running Windows 10 that I built a couple years ago. I also have a Surface Pro that I use from time to time. I don't use my retro PCs for any 'productive' work beyond my retro development interests.

The modern internet is just usable with a late NetBurst CPU. I'm running a dual 3.6 GHz Xeon rig from 2005 with 12 GB and a GT 730. Obviously, modern games are out of the question but it can handle 1080p video just fine. It struggles with higher resolutions though.

Is this too much voodoo?

I have two (well three) daily driver, one is my deskop (very similar to Murugans)

Xeon X5650 @3,6 GHz
Asus Sabertooth X58
12 GB RAM 6x2
Sapphire Vega 56
Asus Xonar D2x
1 tb Samsung 850 evo and 4 tb on spinning rust
Windows 10
in a Lian Li PC7 Plus
hooked up to 3 moniors (two 1080p ones,a Dell and an Eizo and one good old 5:4 NEC)
IBM Model M ofc ^^

You had no problems running the Vega on your X58 with W10?
A friend of mine bought a 64, and on his EVGA X58 board he has the famous BSOD ATIkmdag.sys. He had to fall back to W7 of 8 I believe.
Seems not all boards are causing this then?? There is a 64 for sale here but I don't want to risk ending up with an expensive brick or a reinstall of W7 :p

Forgot to mention my faithful laptop:

Dell Latitude E5520

* I3-2330m thought about upgrading the CPU but nah
* 8GB RAM
* 120GB SSD (Kingston)
* 1366x768

A friend is using it now since a month so I had to fall back to a R60 that was lying here.
Sadly,one of the hinges broke and I'm not really keen on spending more money on it. Kinda liked the bugger

* T2700 upgraded to T7200
* 2GB upgraded to 4GB (only 3 GB usable)
* Installed an 80GB Intel X-25M SSD
* W10

My retro collection: too much...

I'm still using a nearly 8 years old computer with a few upgrades :

- Gigabyte X58 Assassin
- Intel 980X 3.33/3.46/3.6GHz @ 3.73/3.86/4.0 stock Vcore
- 12GB DDR3 1600 CL8
- 250GB SSD Sasmung 830
- AMD Radeon 290X 4GB
- Acer XF270HUA IPS 27 inch 1440p Freesync LFC screen
- Marantz PM7005 async USB DAC
- Windows 10
- custom water loop with 360+120mm of heatsink, and 700RPM gentle typhoon air

Moving to Ryzen 7nm next year, unless I fail my monthly willpower dice roll before, then 2700X it will be.

of course it is, but everyone likes to show their computers

for example, my computer is an old mess, but serves it's purposes flawlessly

FX6100 3.3
8GB DDR3 1600
RX560 4GB (older model, not the newer "d")
Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 (lot of fixes, was non-working)
1TB Western Digital Blue HDD (system and games)
128GB Kingston A400 SSD (games and misc)
2TB Samsung Spinpoint HDD (storage)
Case Sentey Abaddom II GS-6070-II
2 PSU in "parallel" (two chinese cheap psu, one with the motherboard and processors, the other with the gpu and the hdd's and ssd)

currently there are no other problems other than I need to get a good PSU, and maybe upgrade to a newer processor.

Main system:

i7-6700K
4x8GB Corsair Vengeance PC4-21300
Asus ROG Maximus VIII Hero
GTX 970 "Fallout 4 Edition"
Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fata1ity
Cooler Master Centurion 5

Have two 128GB SSDs in a stripe for the system/boot drive, and two 256GB drives in a stripe for storage and game installs.

Coming up on the 3-year anniversary of putting it all together (the graphics card wasn't part of the original build, though).

Daily driver for the last 4 years has been an HP Envy dv6-7246US I'd got (lightly) used back in late 2014, that I upgraded to 8GB of RAM and Windows 10. Also had to replace the AC adapter when it died. AND the battery when it died.
The original 640GB hard drive crapped out late last year. I got a Seagate 2TB Firecuda SSHD but it turned out it couldn't cope, and it crapped out about 6 months. Replaced it with a 256GB Samsung 860 Pro SSD (and an external HDD) and no problems so far *knocks on wood*
Hanging in there, but once some debts are paid down... I could *really* use some new system(s).

I'd move your OS to that SSD; I imagine doing so would make a bigger difference to the "feel" of your system than a faster CPU would.

It is. That machine is a slug by today's standards. It gets crippled by everything now. Youtube is pretty much out on it for certain resolutions/framerates. For example, it can't really cope with 1080p playback, or any mode that uses 60fps, it just can't keep up. I had to install a browser plugin to block 60fps playback so I could watch the video in 720p. Local videos are fine, it's just the player Youtube uses that's unusable on it. If all else fails, 480p becomes the optimal playback resolution since the CPU is hit very hard with Youtube.

Games also have to use very low settings to be playable, even not very demanding ones that are a bit old now. TF2 for example on super low settings (including using an autoexec with engine variables to further drop it beyond the options screen) results in an average of 15fps on 720p. That's what I was used to for that machine, stuff being barely playable. Of course that doesn't apply to old titles, just newer ones after 2007 or so.

Further, that machine takes ages to do literally anything. Applying Windows updates usually takes 30 to 60 minutes alone (Win7 32-bit by the way, probably not the best choice but it's what I got). The machine would greatly benefit from an SSD (it currently uses a 7200RPM HDD), though the Pentium D will still bottleneck everything.

Yeah 1080p is definitely the limit, even then that's pushing it in some cases. Games from 10 years ago for me have to be run in 720p, 1080p is just not feasible unless you enjoy playing on low settings at 15fps. It's not a bad platform for some retro gaming for its time period, but honestly you'd probably be better off with a proper Core 2 Duo instead.

That is likely because google has been slowly switching codecs from H.264 to VP9, VP9 is more efficient but needs more power to decode and it has no real hardware decoding support yet.

Yep, that's exactly what it is. Ever since they started switching, that system has had real trouble with Youtube.

Oh so now I know what is causing the bluescreens^^ I just thought my card was a bit faulty since I bought it as not working on ebay, thinking the previous owner is probably just stupid anyway and since I also got the invoice I took the gamble. Well I do get the bluescreens but maybe once in 50 attempted boots, than I just reset and its all good. I don't have any problem once the system successfully posted so I didn't think about it to much.

Sorry to hear about you AMD display driver issues. Repeating my stats for shits and giggles:

Daily driver desktop
Core i7 3770 topped by a Noctua NH U12P SE2
MSI Z77A-GD65
4x8GB G.SKILL Sniper Series DDR3 1600 with the tacky heat spreader
Asus Strix Radeon RX 480 O8G
Samsung 850 Pro 512GB
Kubuntu Linux 18.04.1 installed on a ZFS root volume
Asus VG278H 27” 120Hz
Dell P2414 24” 60Hz

Rarely used laptop
MacBook Pro with 15” Retina screen
Core i7 4770HQ
16GB DDR3 1600, sadly the max that could be ordered
Iris Pro 5200
256GB Samsung made Apple SSD
MacOS 10.14 Mojave

Server, previous desktop build, slightly upgraded
Core 2 Quad Q9650
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R
4x2GB DDR2 667
Gigabyte Radeon R9 270X 2GB
Samsung 850 Pro 256GB (ZFS root)
2x 4TB WD Red (half of ZFS RAID-10 style configuration)
2x 6TB Toshiba X300 (other half)
Ubuntu Server 18.04.1

As you can see, no Windows. Also my main driver is pretty aged, all things considered.
