Hi guys
No 'introductions' section on this forum so I will say Hi here
I've had various computers in my time, from my first ZX Spectrum I bought second hand in 1983, then a second hand Commodore C64, Amiga 500, Amiga 1500, Amiga 4000, My first PC (A 486DX50), My first Pentium (a P60 that had a damn big CPU chip as I remember!) Then I think it was a P200 I had next.... and so on
I've recently got a bit nostalgic and started playing some old games i used to love. I've tried a spectrum emulator that woked well and the Amiga Emulator - and drove myself nuts playing Lemmings again after all these years!
Oh I also tried DOSBox and got one or two old games running such as Duke Nukem 3D
Now I want more!! I've got original CDs of Tombraider 1, 2, 3 and 'The Last Revelation' here and I've tried running those with some issues on one of my XP rigs. Tombraider 2 seems to work OK other that the helicopter animation sequence at the start freezes wit hteh sound in a loop. but press ESC and the game itself runs
I've got three computers here and I'm wondering what I can run on them. I'm guess interested in games from the 80s, 90s and 2000s mostly
OK so here is the the info on the three systems I have. I actually have 2 more PCs but using them in the office.
OK The oldest one first
HP Compaq
Pentium 4 3GHz
1GHz RAM
80Gb HDD
CDROM drive
Intel 82945G Express Chipset Graphics
Onboard Sound (Realtek I think)
19" 4:3 Aspect Ratio LED Screen
Windows XP Pro 2002
That one runs Tombraider 2 smoothly set to 800x600 Hi Colour 32 and I was quite suprised as it looks good (originally I was using my P200 with Voodoo 2 back in the day). It has one AGP and one PCI slot, plus a PCI Riser that means I could fit a full height PCI graphics card, but unfortunately not a very long card due to the case being a small form factor. What's that PC good for in the way of old games, and is it worth putting a PCI graphics card in? Could I put Windows 98 on that and run older games?
Next one I think I built this around 2004 then upgraded it a bit on 2006 as the original ASUS P5B motherboard or the Pentium Core Duo? Processor had a problem. I still have the P5B deluxe, DIMMS (Rambus?) and CPU here - I need to check them
Anyway this PC Spec is is currently
ASUS P5B Duluxe (at least that is what it says when it boots up)
Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
3Gb RAM
Radion X1800 Series Graphics Card
Kingston SSD 60Gb (C Drive)
320Gb (D Drive)
500Gb (E Drive)
2TB (F Drive)
DVD Rewriter
So What's that one good for in the way of retrogaming, and any worthwhile upgrades?
Last one is the newest, but still its probably 5-6 years old now
ASUS Motherboard (not sure which model)
Intel i7-2600K @ 3.4GHz
16Gb RAM
Radeon HD 6800
Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit
So what's that one good for?... and again, any worthwhile upgrades?
Thanks for your time guys
Best regards
Richard
