I have a 5.25" floppy drive that is only around 27mm high. Are there any adapters that would allow me to put the drive in the standard 5.25" bay that seems to be around 42mm high and not leave any ugly holes next to the drive?

Cut a 5.25" bay cover to fit.
I tried that. It looks really ugly and falls off easily so I was hoping for better solution.
So you made a prototype. Now to do some redesigning and come up with a way to attach it. A couple piece of metal and some screws should work nicely.
Make the piece of metal so you can attach it to both the cut down 5.25" bay cover and to the drive bay itself so it will stay in place.
It will take some time to get it just right. Just because it didn't turn out perfect the first time don't give up.
Those thin floppy drives were made to go into specific cases. I am not away of any bay covers that were made to use a half height 5.25" drive in a full height bay.
I had a similar problem. In the end I just used adhesive tape to cover the hole.
Is this too much voodoo?
