Get something with active PFC. A 400w or higher should be good. Seasonic is my go to brand. High quality and great customer service.

Stay away from crappy brands.

For a Pentium 4 system there is usually nothing to worry about considering the power supply, I'd recommend you to use a refurbished or new power supply though. Though Seasonic is a very reliable and high quality brand, I don't always go for them though. That quality comes with a price and for a Pentium 4 system, which doesn't demand that much of your power supply, it is really not necessary to get the best power supply out there. 😊

I'm using an Inter-Tech SL-500A in my Pentium 4 system myself. It's a brand new German power supply that can be trusted as long as it isn't on very heavy load, according to my local electronics store. Stay away from Chinese junk though; they don't pay as much attention to the safety of power supplies as we Europeans do. 😜

Don't worry guys; of course, if there is some rare hardware in my system, I will make sure I use a Seasonic power supply just to be 100% safe. 😀

I'm lucky to be able to get 350w Seasonic PSUs for about $16 each shipped.

They are listed as "used" but always seem to be new pulls as they still smell new.

Guessing those of you in the USA can't get that good of a deal.

OK thanks for helping

Living the UK, there is options but not as much as usa

So a 400watt would enough to power all that even the agp card (I heard that supposedly the last agp cards are power hogs)

Honestly I would buy something like an EVGA 500 watt bronz unit or something. Just with how cheap, warrantied, and decently built they are. Corsair and other brands also have good units in the 500-700watt range for about $45-55

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

It's always better to go for something like that; I will admit that, but it really isn't necessary for a Pentium 4 system. That EVO-Labs power supply (see the first post) is brand new in box and because it's never going to be under any heavy load in a Pentium 4 system, you should have nothing to worry about at all, Robhalfordfan. 😀

But if you really don't mind paying 75%-100% more, then Seasonic is the best way to go; because it's just the best power supply brand out there! 😉

In any event. P4 boards are the first to draw power mainly from 12V, so:
1) no need for a big heavy 5V line (as with later Athlons)
2) low-power ~300W (but please not low end) modern PSUs are a perfectly good match, only issue is that you may get more SATA and less Molex connectors than you might be looking for.

OK see how the psu that is current setup will handle it and see how well is does handle and try to match it or sightly exceed it as like use that current psu in a win98 build later on

The downside to modern psu for this build is that I am not using sata or pci-e, will using molex, ide and also a floppy drive

You can use some molex splitter cables; that's what I do to solve this issue. 😀

Yeah, but how many molex connectors do you need? CD, HDD, and maybe VidCard?

Dvd drive, two ide hdd and vid card and 4 pin floppy

The mobo has the 20 pin atx power and also a 4 pin 12v power

Would also like a couple extra molex connecters incase of future additions

Hmm... I think three or four molex on a single chain is pretty common these days, so you'll need adapters for a modern PSU to meet your requirements. Splitters are an option, plus SATA to molex power adapters are a thing.

The Antec Earthwatts 380 is great. Got one for free last year and has been powering a C2Q gaming pc

ok been searching internet and came across these

would either of these be good or overkill for the specs this build will be

the manual of the agp card says that it recommends a 400w or higher psu

https://www.newegg.com/global/uk-en/Product/P … N82E16817151119

Either of those could work, but you'd need SATA to Molex adapters if you're using IDE drives.
Also check the dimensions of the power supplies and make sure they'll fit in your computer case.

ok measured the current psu in the rig it should fit

the seasonic psu say it has 5x 4 pin molex

which for current rig with ide and the agp card should be enough

I am assuming that the seasonic psu is ment for bottom of modern case and doesn't matter if turned upside down for the top of a case
