Hey all,

So I've gone and purchased an AWE32 CT2760 soundcard. I've downloaded a driver CD and it's set up my autoexec.bat file. I can play MIDI in Windows absolutely fine.

I then tried a game(DOTT) and got MIDI music but no voices.

I tried Hexen and again, got MIDI but no Sound FX. I ran Diagnose.exe and ran through the steps, it found the card fine with these settings:

Address 220
MIDI port 300
IRQ 5
Low DMA 3
High DMA 7

At the end all tests worked, 8-bit, 16-bit and both music tests. All sound fantastic.

I tried other games but again, only music no FX or voices

I've tried checking the mixer in the Soundblaster folder and moving all the sliders to the right

I have disabled my serial ports and printer port to make sure there are no conflicts.

I've tried in games different options, SB, SB16, AWE32

I've tried adjusting the jumpers on the board, I noticed no jumper on MSEC, added one but it's remained at 300 rather than 330 though this is unlikely to cause the problem. I've also added a jumper on the pins for MIDI emulation as it should have a jumper by default but this made no difference.

I tried setting my configurations in the BIOS to "auto" rather than manual reserving IRQ5 for legacy ISA but all that did was made the card IRQ2 (instead of IRQ5) with the same symptoms.

Windows sounds play fine, MIDI music plays fine. I'm just at a lose with Voices/Sound FX and right now feel like I've wasted nearly £100 on this card when I had less issues with my ALS120 SB Clone.

My autoexec.bat:

Mode con coverage prepare=((850) C:\Windows\Command\eta.cpi

Mode con coverage select=850

Keyb UK,,C:\Windows\Command\Keyboard.sys

LH C:\Windows\Mouse.com

SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0

SET SOUND=C\SB16\CTSND

SET BLASTER=A220 I2 D3 H7 P300 E620 T6

C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S

C:\SB16\AWEUTIL /S

(please note it's "I2" since the IRQ changed, it was correctly set to "I5" before.) Ive tried Googling the issue but seem to find people having the opposite issue, Sound FX/Voices but no MIDI, plus a lot of mention of the PnP cards but not the non-PnP variants)

Thank you everyone in advance!

Try the following:

  • Change your sound cards' settings to use the default settings of A220, I5, D1, H5, P330 & E620.
  • read through the "README" files of DOTT & Hexen. There might be some mention that describes the issues you have and as to why certain settings might not work.
  • Make sure that each game is configured to use the settings that corresponds to your sound card's settings and, by extension, your SET BLASTER environment variable.
  • Set up your sound card (by running Diagnose again) to "configure" the High DMA channel to use the Low DMA channel.

I can't seem to get it to use P330, I put a jumper on MSEC pins which should set it to P330, but it's still being detected at 300.

I have set each game to use IRQ5, DMA 3 and MIDI port 300.

I haven't tried setting high DMA to use low DMA, I'll try that now

Okay, went into BIOS and put settings back to manual and reserved IRQ5 and 7 to legacy ISA, the card is found at IRQ5 again.

Re-ran Diagnose.exe, card found at address A220, detected all dram, auto detected at IRQ5, MIDI port auto detected at 300(I tried 330 but got an error), low DMA auto set to 3, set high DMA to same as low. 're ran tests, all worked fine.

Restarted

Tried Doom 2, Hexen and DOTT but same issue as before

Okay quick update:

Performed another restart before trying the following games:

DOTT: Got MIDI audio only
Monkey Island 1: Got MIDI audio only
Doom 2: Got MIDI audio only
Hexen: Got MIDI audio only
Heretic: Got MIDI audio only
GTA: Got CD audio from the CD plus Sound FX in the game, that said I'm not sure it's using the same digitised type audio, almost 100% sure it's Digital PCM audio? Willing to be corrected as my knowledge is lacking

All the above games have been ran in Windows. By MIDI audio I mean MIDI music

Additional:

Just tried Simcity 2000 CD Collection, audio and music both work fine in Windows. Sadly the game won't run in DOS to test and my 3.5" Floppy disk version of SC2000 no longer read properly.

Tomorrow I'll try some games in DOS to see if the issue is related to Windows or not. It is strange as all the games above worked fine on my Avance Logic ALS120, but the AWE32 just doesn't like them and sadly they're a fair selection of the games I got the card for

Hello all,

Quick update on this issue:

Couldn't get the AWE32 to work at all so packed it away and purchased a Soundblaster 16 (CT2770), thought I'd have more luck with a PnP ISA card rather a none PnP card. Unfortunately experiencing exactly the same issue.

Get music in games but no sound effects. Running Diagnose.exe it detects the card, sets the I/O to 220, the IRQ to 7 (iirc, could have been 5?), sets DMA to 1 and high DMA to 5 and the address to 330. Card test is fine and saves to autoexec.bat / config.sys.

But any game I try only has midi music and no sound effects.

I've reinstalled Windows, set BIOS to defaults but also tried ISA in legacy mode. Two cards with the same problem and I am stumped. I might have to go back to my ALS 120 card as although noisy and not a true OPL3 card at least works.

And what other cards are in your system?

I have an ATI Rage Pro AGP card, a Realtek PCI Ethernet card and then the SB16 CT2770, previously was the AWE32 which had the same symptoms

Things I've tried (in no particular order):

- Swapping the AWE32 for the SB16
- Reinstalling Windows98SE
- Changing the BIOS ISA settings to Legacy ISA
- Resetting BIOS to defaults
- Installing SB drivers from Vogons and directly from Creative
- On the AWE32 checked the jumpers
- Adjusting the settings on Autoexec.bat
- Rerunning Diagnose.exe, on both cards it goes through fine and the tests play fine at the end
- Tried running games in Windows and DOS mode
- Tried multiple games such as Hexen, DOTT, Doom etc

MIDI music always works on both cards but sound effects do not.

FIXED IT! Only took me 2 months on and off working at it.

For anyone who stumbles here from Google who has a non-PnP card:

- After checking all jumpers are set correctly, reset your BIOS to defaults
- If there is an option for "PNP OS Installed", set this to yes
- In Windows, go to Device Manager, right click the soundcard and go to Properties. Press the Resources tab and unselect "Use automatic settings". Change Basic Configuration 0 to:
-- 0220-022F
-- Interrupt Request 05
-- DMA 01
-- DMA 05

*Ensure no conflicts get listed in the Window. For me it was USB, I removed that to free up IRQ5 so the card wouldn't use IRQ7)

Adjust your Autoexec.bat file to match the above, restart and you should be good to go! 😀

All my games now working such as Tyrian 2000 / DOTT / Hexen / Quake / Doom etc

You never listed your config.sys... did you have the PnP Configuration Manager installed? Device driver loaded? How about the ctmmsys (IIRC) device drivers?

For my P-166 with an AWE32, all I got was pain and misery until all of the above were loaded. In my experience, early jumperless boards were more of a hassle than just setting jumpers until you moved 100% to Windows. Or, maybe I should phrase this as: DOS sucks at dynamic allocation of... well, anything really. The mid 90s were an awkward period in PC computing.

If it weren't for Win95, PCI, and USB, I think Apple might have eventually taken the crown.

The Config Manager didn't help but I think that's only for the PNP variants of the card. This card is configured purely by jumpers. Other than using P300 rather than P330 which seems to have no ill effects, my jumpers are set correctly.

The problem i had seems to have been related to the card going to IRQ7 due to a USB PCI expansion card I had. Removing that card and assigning IRQ5 for the card and DMA 1, High DMA 5 seems to have resolved the problem. That and resetting BIOS.

The SB16 I got should work now too so will keep that spare.

Yeah Windows 9x really made PCs much more user friendly. It's not until you go back to Win98 with DOS 6.22 beneath that you realise how much easier Windows was and how much easier it has gotten.
