So, in my ongoing quest to build a Pentium III machine from my pile of spare parts, I seem to be having another issue. I am using a motherboard that I think had a Pentium II in it to begin with. I want to use the Pentium III 750MHz CPU I have. When I turn it on the first screen displays the CPU as "Pentium III CPU at 750MHz". Then shortly after that just before Windows 98 starts to load it displays the following in flashing text "UNKNOWN CPU ID, MISSING MICRO CODE". Once Windows has loaded when I check the System Properties it says "x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 3". I have tried to identify the model of the motherboard without success, there is nothing written on it as far as I can tell that is a model number. The BIOS displays 2A69KL1A and I think the board is running the Intel 440BX/GX/ZX Chipset.

So I am left wondering if the board actually supports this CPU or not. I wish I had the manual for the motherboard. I can post pictures of the motherboard if it will help.

Depends on the motherboard. With my Asus CUVX4 a bios update removed the micro code error. It is all about if bios is new enough to recognize what the cpu is. The first screen is about what the cpu says it is and the error is about if the bios actually recognizes what the cpu is. The cpu generally works if the motherboard supports the FSB speed and the voltage, but it doesn't mean older bios recognizes what the cpu is.

Perhaps if you post pictures of the motherboard someone will recognize it and you can find out about bios updates.

Check the side of the last (ISA) slot, that frequently has a sticker with model info. But otherwise, give up a pic, good chance someone will recognize it.

That is what I was thinking. Of course if I don't know the model of the MB I won't know if there is a BIOS update available. Here is a picture of the MB. It might not be very helpful as it is in the case with everything plugged in right now. I might unplug it all and get a better picture if necessary.

Well I feel like a bit of a fool. Removed the cards and found 6ABX2V Ver 1.2 as model. It was hidden by the GPU. Now I need to find a manual and also see if there is a BIOS update needed.

From this web site it only mentions Pentium II and Celeron being supported. That sucks.

The original manual says it supports katmai P3 cpus too and if you install bios update it might recognize coppermine too.

I see the following in the list (see picture). There are 2 downloads there under 1Mbit and 2Mbit. The 2Mbit has a later date so I assume I use that. The download is a .bin file. How do I flash the BIOS on this machine? I assume by booting from a floppy etc.

The flash utility usually says what size your old bios is. I think it depends on capacity of your bios chip.

I have updated the BIOS on way newer machines lots of times before. But not sure how to proceed on this one. Real life is getting in the way right now so I will have to get back to this in a few days. I might be posting more questions on how to flash. I started building PCs in 2005 so this is before my time!

Thanks

x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 3 is indeed a P3 so your ok, The bios update will hopefully clear the microcode message for you but if not I wouldn't worry.

Thanks! Hopefully all will be OK. I have got busy at work past few days so have not had a chance to get to it. It is here in my office so when it gets quiet again I will be working on it. So even if the microcode message is still there the CPU is performing correctly in Windows?

It is frustrating I want to work on it and it is usually getting quieter at this time of year in my line of work. 😠

If the BIOS doesn't support anything above Pentium 2 microcode you would loose support for SSE which was introduced with the Pentium 3.
I suspect though it supports Katmai but not Coppermine microcode and not aware of any major microcode changes, even SEE isnt that important on a gaming PC of this era.

Forgive me if I am wrong but I have looked through that manual and it does not mention how to flash the BIOS...
