In the demoscene there's quite a few demos with full 3d engines making use of the FPU, targeting 040 and 060 CPUs.

Quake certainly is possible.

For some reason, I like modern OCS demo's better. It is more from a technical perspective.
I am talking about modern demo's running on 68000 7.14 mhz, 512k Ram and of course OCS chipset.

I agree, but 3D is rather limited on a stock Amiga.

Technically it's 7.09 MHz, since nearly all demos are for PAL machines. NTSC runs at 7.16 MHz.
And most demos need 1 MB of memory.

And heh, Planet Rocklobster actually competed against our 8088 MPH in the same compo.

first time I see a amiga post here, always wondered why no amiga fans here because it was such a popular computer. I am also a amiga fan I built one from parts I sourced on the internet like 6 months ago. Only a base a500 Revision 5 board from memory.

Amiga has always been my dream but we could only afford a c64 back in the early 90s and always admired my neighbours a500. I definitely have a soft spot for the a500, very nice to see a post about one

On the topic, I saw a scandoubler mentioned, I also bought one for my build, it came from Poland. The picture is nice and clean on a lcd like you guys mentioned but I noticed when there is movement, for example playing a platform game the area around the movement seems a bit distorted, blurred. Its not very noticeable but I am curious, is this common?

Why it is blurry, I have no clue on. I have no idea why you have seen that. It might be the monitor, as most LCD do not support 50hz... I have two IBM thinkvision and one 17 inch samsung. And none support 50. Only my Sony does that. If you have access to an CRT, then try it, just to see what happens. You know, like borrowing one for an afternoon or something.

Vogons is mostly for PC's. So this is what people use. Sometimes an Amiga or Spectrum or something will pop up. Can you post pictures of your's?

It still is.
I suppose the Amiga people just stick to their own dedicated forums. Vogons seems mostly focused around IBM PC compatibles, DOS and DOSBox.
I've always been a Commodore guy myself. First a Commodore 64, then an Amiga, and my first two PCs were also Commodores.
The Amiga is the one that always felt the most special to me. Its custom hardware allows you to do the most crazy things.

PC either it would boot a cartridge or it would boot into Basic. I would write programs in basic but I had no way of saving them (no storage) so I would leave the computer on all the time. After that my father got an ibm compatible Epson 8088 and we were x86 from then on. I am interested in the alternatives I missed out on like AmigaOS and MacOS so thanks for sharing your experiences.

It was a way different time, in which we did a lot of piracy. It was like the wild west of the computerworld back then. Usually we gathered once each week, to be able to play games and learn about hardware and somebody might give lectures on how to program. Now not everyone had a computer at that time. So it was a small group of some 20 young teenagers getting together that day each week.

People usually cam with their Amiga500's in a backpack and a tv that they carried in their arms. Somebody had a small vagon, that they used to haul their equipment by foot. We played two player games around one machine, that we shared for that game. There were no network at that time, so if we wanted a copy of a game, we asked to look through a buddy's disk-boxes. And if we found a game that we liked, then we bought a set of floppy disks from the leader of the computerclub. He had like 1000's of empty floppy disks in long cardboard boxes of 100 disks, that he had bought in Germany for like 1/5 of what they were sold for in Denmark. So he sold them at 50% and the money he made, was donated to the computerclub. So yeah.... A lot of piracy was going on. It was like really unusual to see someone buying an original copy. These days it is so different. I can still remember the leader yelling "Copy Tiiiiime" one hour before the club closed each time it was held.

Now... Not only did we have this computerclub. We had something called Computerweekend. It was still wayyyy before LAN or Network if you like. It was when us geeks and nerds had our biannual computer gathering. Yeah... Two times a year. And we slept amoungst the computers in sleeping bags. Well some of us did it. Some fell asleep on their Amiga500 or PC keyboard. It was not unusual to see someone using their computer as a pillow, because they fell asleep during an X-Copy session. Like half of us did not sleep for one whole weekend. We had stashes of cola, candy and chips/crisps all around. Tables filled with random floppy disks. Someone sampling sounds for tracker music. Someone repairing or installing hardware and someone playing sensible soccer or something.

During these dataweekends, we had other activities. Like body crashing...

Then we had competitions in floppy disk throwing, wich is kind of like diskos or spear throwing, just with floppy disks. Later they used floppy drives (5,25 and then 3,50 inch), and then harddrive throwing, then cd-throwing (yes, drives too). We also played basketball on the local court, because the weekend was in a schools gym-hall. And there were a lady preparing each meal in the schools kitchen. Usually spaghetti and meatsauce, stuff like that. And there were an improvised cinema, showing terminator and hellraiser on vhs.

Yeahhh... It was a beautifull time back then. Lots of "creative" stuff going on. Yet. If someone sold pirated game, then they would actually get beaten up in school. Yet we had a rule. One rule... If you got one copy of a game, then you had to share it to as many as possible. For free... Else you could mind as well go and buy an original.

Ok so this is my little amiga, no match for your Goliath but something I really enjoyed piecing together from parts and only took about 25 years until I got one, it was my dream around 1990 to have a amiga 500 but a c64 was all I had.

Basically I collected it all piece by piece and yes my case needs a good proper clean, I just ran out of energy.
Anyway I started off by getting the case, keyboard, bought a few motherboards just in case and all the other parts came slowly slowly, forums, auctions, second hand shops eveything was my hunting ground.

the specs are:
Original rev 5 board (old angus chip as some games complain)
512 extension card.
gotek floppy emulator
scan doubler so I can use it on my lcd
a new aftermarket power supply
original mouse
- waiting for a joypad as alot of games don't work on keyboard

That is a good basic Amiga500. Nice work putting it together. It will allow you to play most of the games that were released. And there are tons of good OCS games. The scandoubler you bought is actually an arcade upscaler board. I had one last year or something, and it had a tendency to act up in workbench. It would create a kind of ghost effect around the mouse pointer. So I was not 100% happy with the result it gave. Then I sold it for way under what I have given for it, and used the money for the internal scandoubler that I have in my machine.

Joypad? Nono... You need a real Joystick. One of the most durable stick you can find, is the red/black Wico Command Control. Go for the one with a ball and not the grip or the stick version. Like this here below:

It is not the best for fast paced platform games, and if you are into those, then there is "The Arcade", which might be the best of all, depending on who you ask. I like it personally. Yet only for platform games, such as Giana sisters.

Finally, you may also want something with a "Pistol Grip". For those games that require fast shooting action. Like Turrican-II. And get one with autofire if you have the option to source one.

yes the ghost effect is exact what I see too and was trying to explain as a blur, you put it much better. Can see it around the mouse pointer or something moving in a game.

That last joystick looks like one I had on my c64 25~ years ago I will need to look into those!

Being a fan of amiga 500 in the early 89-90s I like the older ocs platform games so I am done and happy with this early amiga system.

However I do have a original xbox with winxuae emulating a amiga 1200 and about 3gb of whdload games just in case.

this is the joypad im waiting for to arrive, I wanted something to match the amiga, when I was growing up and used to go to my rich friends house he had master system joypads on his amiga so its nostalgia for me

"The Arcade" stick's looking awesome - I remember it from the magazines back then.

That red joystick is a Spectravideo Quickshot Turbo II. I used to have one back in the day.

Yea, it's a Dutch product. I originally got two for my C64, and later used them on my Amiga. Many of my friends also had them.
They're excellent joysticks, especially the early ones. The later ones used a cheap bent metal plate for the fire button, instead of a real microswitch. These didn't have the same nice feedback, and also would break over time due to metal fatigue.
They are also excellent for those 'waggle your joystick'-games like Track 'n' Field, Decathlon and such.

Suzo also built an adapter to connect them to a PC gameport, so I also used them for my PC for many years (since most PC games were ports from Atari, C64, Amiga etc, they didn't make use of the analog abilities of the joystick anyway).

I have also one A500 in my storage. The same Rev.8A like you. Also have one further A500(Rev.8A ) as backup, but it has worse case condition.

My project is still freezing.... OK, i do not have such a great beast of 68k30 cpu 😊 ,but starting back in the day (in the 90's),
somebody of my fathers's colleages has soldered the sockets of a 512kb expansion onto my board.
After this operation, i still have recognized that it is still not working with the additional 512kb ram's from the expansion.

Very later, in time of world-wide-web, i have found that you have to solder some step's more (--> MOD A500 into A500+ ).
The only question for me is: it is worth to final this mod ... ? 😕

Yup. It has come a long way, since stock configuration. And I have taken my time, as I bought it in Feb. of 2018.

Regarding the chipmem mod, then there are various ways of doing upgrades. Like the one you are mentioning.

There are yet another aproach, like the one that I have taken. Which is to use a Gary adaptor and do a JP2 mod.
You can find it explained a bit further in my blog (link in my sig' below), in a blog entry that I did last night.
It is totally worth it, as you will be getting more ChipMem and be able to do more stuff like longer samples in Protracker.
Yet some games are not happy with 1mb ChipRam, and you need to find a way of disabling 512k chip.
If that is a switch on the JP2 or something, I really do not know. As I have not been digging deeper into the "why's" of it.

If you do not want that 030 upgrade on your machine, then you can actually do something else.
On Amibay, there is someone selling an IDE controller/adaptor and 8mb FastMem boards.
This way you can have what I have, just with 6mb extra FastMem and without the CPU upgrades. (CPU/FPU).
And with a 2mb mem upgrade such as mine. You will have an Ram count of 11 MegaByte in total.
(That is 1mb Chip, 8mb Fast and 2mb Slow)

Finally get an internal Scandoubler... There is the new IndevisionECS V2 being avaliable 22dec 2018.
And there is the one I used, which is the ScanPlusECS.

I went for the ScanPlusECS...
As it is cheaper and I have an Sony LCD monitor, that can do 50hz refresh rate on the correct resolution.
