Last year I have acquired a pretty extensive collection of old Dutch pc magazines, from 1987-2002. Here you can find randomly scanned ads from those magazines, more will follow, have fun!

Prices are listed in Dutch 'FL' or 'guldens', divide by 2.20371 to get the price in euro's, excluding inflation correction, just to get an idea of the astronomical prices.

Due to copyright I can't scan complete magazines, nor (review) articles. If you are the owner of the copyright of an ad that you want to be removed, then please contact by PM.

And now? Are we supposed to decipher this alien language?

Google Books has an extensive library of PC Magazine issues and others from the 80s/90s including all of their ads. Just a reminder for those of us who understand English and feel confused by Dutch.

I know you like trolling 😉

The world doesn't stop at the U.S. borders. 😉

Anyway, these scans can give you an idea of what was available at the time, mostly in Europe and for what kind of money. Some stuff is unique for my country and wasn't for sale in the U.S. (assuming you live there). Furthermore these ads come from magazines that are not available on Google.

It kind of works other way around too. There isn't point putting text in an international forums that is in language that is only spoken by 0.3% of the people and you can't even copy/paste it to google translator. I would not try putting any Finnish stuff here either.
I suppose there is some parts of those ads that most people would understand though.

Even in Finnish I'd be able to figure out things like "Soundblaster 32 IDE PnP 279", I'd just need to look up the exchange rate involved (Markka - long time since I saw one of those...).

The blurb is just blurb and vapid in any language.

People still don't get it we dutchies are taking over Vogons? 🤣

Nice, I have a lot of magazines also and it amazes me what prices the hardware sold for. Also reminds me WHY I had so much hardware rubbish like Pcchips at the time..... I couldn't afford all those nice things. (people think old hardware is expensive right now....).

Alternate and Informatique are still going strong as webshops now, which is very nice!

I don't mind the language - pictures are more important in this case... maybe some Euro specific stuff can be found in these.
archive.org has plenty of US based material if one cares for the text.

I used to have one of those. They were cheaper than digital controls, could not store settings for different modes (obviously), but were also sort of foolproof and allowed for a great range of adjustments. God, how did we ever manage to stare for hours on end onto those screens? Any high res was 60 Hz or worse on my CRTs back then, couldn't afford high vertical refresh rate monitors. Too expensive...

Philips already made flatscreens in 1989. 11 Years later in 2000 they were finally starting to become mainstream..

See my first post.

Everything was expensive in the 90's, one of the reasons why so few people owned a pc at home.
