I finally got a fresh install of windows xp installed and am wondering if I should install any of the "optional" updates. Is there any real benefit for these?

EDIT: Thanks for the replies! I will probably go and install the updates.

You might as well install them, they most likely are bug fixes. I see no real reason not to unless you just don't want to wait for the install.

Kind of curious if there are community repos or custom roll-up packs for old Windows versions? Like, has someone made a community final service pack for Win98?

For W98 there's one, http://www.htasoft.com/u98sesp/.

Dunno about other Windows versions. Would definitely be interested to know if there's an XP one at least.

I believe there is also one for Windows XP called Windows XP sp4 or something like that, though I have no experience with it.

Run far away from it.... Just use the February 2004 Microsoft update CD for Windows updating Windows 98.

Then use the USB storage driver and you are set.

No need for all the crazy hacked together stuff that is flaky in the unofficial service pack.

I had no idea that CD even existed. I've found plenty of useful stuff (like an iso for my sound blaster audigy), but I guess I should give vogonsdrivers a browse. 🤣

There are the Winfuture.de updatepacks, but not sure how well they would work for non German Windows.

The base system update package from U98SESP has never given me any problems that I know of at least, using it on a few systems. The feature options that adds stuff from later Windows versions etc are probably best to avoid though.

Also had no idea that official update pack existed, will try it the next time I install W98SE 😀
