Hey all,

I recently purchased an Apricot MS540 from eBay, however it has a Fingerprint Password upon the POST screen.

It doesn't seem this can be cleared by resetting the BIOS.

The user manual states:

"The Apricot Electronic Fingerprinting program appears
every time you start Windows 95 until you have branded
the computer. If you don’t brand your computer
promptly, someone else might do it before you!
After you have entered your details you are prompted to
set a branding password. This password will be requested
if you ever need to run the Electronic Fingerprinting
program again to change the branding information (for
example, if you change address).
Optionally, for extra security, you can decide that this
same password is requested every time the computer is
turned on, or every time the mains power supply is
interrupted.
If you forget your branding password, you can use a
special fall-back password instead. The fall-back password
is a 12-digit number that is unique to your computer. It
is displayed only once, the first time you set a branding
password."

Unfortunately I do not know the password nor do I have the fall-back password. I've searched online and asked everywhere but I fear I'm at a Dead end. I don't want to throw away a good PC purely because of a password so hoping you guys can help.

Thank you all in advance

Had a quick look in the manual - https://www.manualslib.com/manual/104540/Mits … 540.html#manual

Page 63:

Next to outer video upgrade socket, default position link pins 1 and 2. Moving the link to pins 2 and 3 disconnects the battery from the BIOS memory, and will cause all the user settings to be lost. To be used with caution and only in the event of an access password being lost

Could be worth a shot!

Tried this but it just reset settings and time. This password remains unfortunately

Have you tried reflashing/updating the BIOS? Also i didn't quite get if it lets you get to Win95 or if the prompt comes up as soon as the machine boots.

It comes up before Windows boots. It's just after the memory check.

Hmm could do. I might try that

No go. Password appears before the machine even reads the floppy or access to BIOS

Suppose the obvious answer is 'ask the seller' - if it's the listing I'm seeing (Bristol, UK perhaps?) they claim to have test booted the machine into Windows 95 and tried games & apps, so they must have got beyond the fingerprint password (actual or fallback) to do so. If they didn't provide you with this password as part of the sale, I'd consider it 'not as described' i.e. "...and all working as it should" as with security this resilient it's basically a brick. Contact the seller and if you get no joy, raise a dispute thru ebay / paypal.

It wasn't one in Bristol. I can't see one for sale in Bristol on eBay?

Ah, OK - I was only searching sold listings when I spotted the Bristol one. Still, have you contacted your own seller?

My seller got it with the password. The system owner moved house in 2017

Is the bios chip socketed? If so, you might be able to flash a blank chip and go back to the defaults.

I've not had a proper look to see which EPROM may be the BIOS, but they are all soldered rather than socketed
