Aside from the ridiculous, inefficient, and awkward 3D file system browser, I thought their art department did a good job of making those scenes seem legitimately computer-y. Even still it looks like a fairly accurate depiction of a NOC.

I was not, however, an 11(?) year old with access to SGI systems running Unix. But if it had been a DOS system with a QBasic program controlling the place, I could've given those dinosaurs what-for.

Also, looking at the photos makes me want to snatch those beautiful CRTs right through my sad compromise of a monitor (which is an IPS LCD, but still...) %)

Well, at 11-13ish years old I didn't even know what an "SGI" system was, but I knew enough to understand it was great stuff! If you gave me an SGI thing at that age you would have given me a heart attack!

Movie, albeit not my niche, was well made and the props looked great.

I didn't pay much notice to the computers until I read about Quake's early development where SGI was mentioned pretty often(albeit it was done on NeXT I assume). The movie was also made in 1993 - quite a nice date for early 3D games.

Sadly, an era gone by.

I couldn't remember the specific computers, was 15 years old back then, and my knowledge outside PCs, Macs and Commodore's models was quite rudimentary. I do however remember that girl's line, "It's a UNIX system!!", and wondering how the hell she supposed knowing that would help her in a completely customized graphical control app 😁

Learned about SGI and Irix when Nintendo started hyping the N64, and talking about them and Jurassic Park in their marketing.

Yeah I remember that sentence very well since the first time I watched the movie! I had heard about "Unix" and that sounded like: whoa, these guys are the giants! 🤣
