Where can I get an IO shield for a Baby AT board?

Postby bergqvistjl » 2019-3-13 @ 11:18

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on an IO shield for a Baby AT board (that specifically has a DIN keyboard connector at the very least). One that would fit an ATX case?

If you want metal for screening, then you can get blank ones (on a slow boat from China) - and if it only needs one hole for DIN KB, that's about the best case for dealing with a blank - though it would either be a very large drill bit, or a small hole cutter

If going that route, I'd use a screw hole punch. It'll be next to impossible to work that thin spring steel like sheet metal with any larger spiral drill than a few millimeters. Maybe a step drill could work if you clamp the shield to a piece of wood, and you're extremely careful, but wouldn't bet on it.

Also, using a screw hole punch is way less risky. Wouldn't want to have my hands anywhere close to that shield if the drill bit/hole saw seizes.

I used a step drill and a wood block for my shield. Works quite well. Go slow and cautiously. Maybe apply some cutting oil.

Surprised there weren't more of these officially made, given Baby AT boards lasted until 1999...

Nearly all early ATX cases came with these, they were all just immediately trashed.
