I want to update the bios on this 486 VLB motherboard.
It is a "Gigabyte GA-486vs". version .8A ( AWARD Bios ).

Does anyone know where I can get the latest bios ?

motherboard manual:

Okay, I am having problems setting up this motherboard.
I have tried several IDE controllers in different slots but can’t get this motherboard boot off drives.

I am using a Goldstar IDE ISA controller.
It post and get to this screen and then locks up.
The keyboard also becomes unresponsive.
I can not control-alt-delete to reboot.
I have to power cycle the computer.

The bios setup program detects my hard-drive and floppy drive.
I have all other ports disabled.
I only have enabled the Floppy and hard-drive controller.

I have tried several IDE controllers with the same results.
I tried all the IDE slots.
I can’t get past this screen.

These is also a bios setting for AT Bus speed.
What speed should I use ?
I an using 1/4.

I tried bios defaults and setup defaults and neither seem to work.

Sorry, I'd found this much earlier after your OP, but I didn't have time to post - it was under it's original Gigabyte filename vsfbi.zip

https://web.archive.org/web/19980125044505/ht … w/software.html (near the bottom of the page)

Their link is dead, but the file seems to be available on a number of Taiwanese education ftp sites - I got it from here

I found this ROM from this website but the website reads that the TI EPROM is not flash able.
That it must be flashed with an eprom reader device.
But I found this AWDflash utility that reads it supports the Texas Instruments ( TI ) EPROM.
Do you think it will work ?
But first I need to get this motherboard to boot off the drives.
See my post above.

Okay, I got it working for a while but now it stopped working again.
It turned out the cache was bad. All I had to do was re-seat the cache and it worked for a while but now stopped working again.
It turns out the bad cache was causing the motherboard to hang.
I smelled something burning in the process. But I examined the motherboard and I did not see any signs of damage.
It still works but runs very slow now. I put some new cache in it -20ns shows up as 128kb.
I think the problem is with the cache.
The original cache was 512kb. ( 8 pieces with 28 legs each.).
and 1 tag all running at -15ns.

What do you think ?
Could something else be damaged ?
Should I try to repair ?
It's working right now but boots very slow like a 286 I don't know why ? But it hangs again at boot screen
I can access the bios fine and detects all my drives fine.
It is just when it gets to try to boot from floppy that it hangs.
There is NO problem with my drives. The problem is with the cache memory.
What do you think is wrong ?
How can I fix this ?
Where can I purchase new cache memory ?
Also what is this "P24D" ?
Is it only for 486dx4 or can I use it with 486dx2 too ?
What about WB ( write-back ) is this only for 486dx4 or can I use it with 486dx2 too

I think you are right.
I need to rebuild this board with NEW caps, cache, and a NEW battery before I try to install on it.
I just need to know where to buy NEW cache ?

This maybe a little off topic, but i noticed that you wrote in first post that your mb revision is 8A. If it is possible, please make&send here photos of your MB in high resolution top and bottom. A few days ago i bought revision 8A of this MB and it seems that voltage regulator for 3.3v is missing. somwhere i found info that revison 8A was made with and without voltage regulator and also version with voltage regulator had some modification on bottom side (pigtail with some signal rerouted). If I manage to gather all differences maybe it would be possible to upgrade my MB to handle CPUs with 3.3V. I also ask all of members who have revision 8A with voltage regulator (it is located above cpu socket in TO220 housing) to send photos here of top and bottom of this motherboard.
