I've got an EP-58MVP3C-M baby AT motherboard that I'm trying to put in a regular AT case (Sun Moon Star branded).
It nearly lines up, but things are clearly off. There are two brass standoffs that are spaced slightly too far part to be used.
What's the deal? Shouldn't these be compatible? Do I need a baby AT specific case?

Maybe the sheet metal in the case is ever so slightly bent? Maybe you can just geeently push on one of the standoffs and bend the metal a bit until it lines up, it doesn't look like it needs much convincing...

Tolerances for stuff like this in the AT era was generally just kind of bad, especially with cheap boards and cases.

I plied and pleaded, but I can't get them to line up. When one is dead on, the other is considerably off-center.
The case is pretty substantial at 25lbs, even if it's not great quality. It's not something that couldn't easily be bent in the first place, much less un-bent.

Either way, to answer your original question, there should be no differences like this between Baby AT and full AT. Baby AT is strictly a subset of the AT standard and should have the same screw positions. Keyword: should. Stuff happens, you'll just have to make it work somehow 😉

As others have said.. cases back then were really, really, really iffy about having everything lined up properly.

Pretty sure out of the dozens of cases I had back then, only a very few actually lines up like they should have. Brand and weight mattered not for the most part.

And if all the holes line up with the board and you install the board without first installing a card to hold the board in place to make sure you could fit cards in after tightening everything down, you would most likely have issues with getting cards in there properly.

Even now, I usually just install the screws but don't tighten them down at all until i have installed a card and the screw to hold the card in place. It just makes things so much easier afterwards since there is always a little bit of play as far as the board being able to move around a little bit when not tightened down.

What I would have done would be to remove one of the brass and put a plastic standoff in its place, and so no bending required

This is exactly my experience. Even when cramming Baby-AT boards into ATX cases. You definitely want to insert cards in the first and last slots to be sure they all are usable before tightening the board screws down.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.
