Greetings, been coming to Vogons for about a year now and getting deeper and deeper into old computers, I finally created an account I'm finally putting together my dream 486 DX4. I picked up a Trident TGUI9440 via eBay and have a bunch of other parts on the way. At some point there was a a driver pack uploaded over here:

Re: Windows 3.1x & Windows NT 3.51 Graphics Card Drivers Collection

But the links no longer work. Does anyone still have that file they can upload over in the drivers section? Also anyone know of Windows 95 drivers for this card or maybe they come baked in? I thought I ran Windows 95 on my 486 and it had a Trident VLB card in it.

Thanks so much for any help. At some point I need to do a intro post with my collection.

Woo thank you! I'll wait till I verify these (it will be a week or two before I get all the parts together to make my 486) then if it's OK I will stick these over in the drivers section with credit to you. Cheers!

Not sure if I should start a new thread, but to keep things tidy I'll start here first.

SO I finally have my 486 build coming together. The Trident TGUI9440 VLB went in and is working perfectly. For now this machine will be mainly DOS, but Win 3.1 installed as well. I installed the Win 3.1 drivers within Windows on a brand new install, right off the floppies. 😁 But the machine hard locks when Windows tries to load with tha TGUI 9440 or the non-TGUI 9440 driver installed.

I initially tried 1024x768 256 colors. I reset the default 640x480 driver with SETUP.EXE and tried 800x600 256 colrs, then 640x480 16 colors. All result in a hard lock.

WIn 3.1 works fine in 256 color VESA 800x600, but a bit slow since it's not accelerated. Also a hald full of DOS games I have installed work fine. So I think these are not quite the right drivers for my card or there's something wrong with my card.

The README talks about "AGi" Looking around I believe there is a TGUI9440AGi specific card? Mine is the non0AGi version.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Over the weekend I'm going to try a Windows 95 install (for funzies) and see if the WIn95 driver posted here gives any better results.

Cheers!

There should be drivers for 9440 and 9440AGi, as well as 512KB and 1MB cards. By any chance does your system have 64MB of RAM? That might prevent it from allocating a linear framebuffer. That's the only thing I can think of.

Wow this seems to exactly fixed the issue. I don't think I would have ever tried removing one of the modules. Not that it would be terribly fast but would this issue still happen in Windows 95? Is this issue specific to Trident cards? If I added another meg of ram to the card could that allow me to run 64megs of ram and still get acceleration?

Also the driver seems to offer Trident and Trident 9440 but doesn't say anything about AGi specifically in the driver names.

Thanks again for your help.

The win95 driver probably also needs a linear framebuffer (the driver name says "linear accelerated"). The problem is that it normally is located at 63MB and it can't go higher. It's just a limitation of this Trident chip. So if you have 64MB of RAM it blocks off that area.

The readme file says it can be moved but only between 18MB-63MB. So the "memory hole" BIOS option used by some other cards may not work either since that would be at 15MB.

Hi all

I’m having similar issue. My trident 9440 won’t install on win95. Only the Microsoft trident svga driver are working. The drivers here in the library always lead to “not working... consult supplier for other driver. I was having 64mb ram so I removed half of them due to above message. Unfortunately the same issue. Strange.

Do you have further hints?

Edit: I found an older version in the web. Don’t know why but that one worked. Maybe I will try now again with 64mb. Aaaa better not 😅

Hi, I dont have right now the time to check in detail which source it was. So I attached all the drivers I own. One of these should work. Good luck and let me know whether one of them worked
