bit of a dumb question but i couldn't find a precise answer to this: when not using all of the connectors on a SCSI cable, is it better to put the last (terminated) device at the end of the cable or closer to the SCSI adapter?

The last device with termination must be connected to the very end of the cable. It's a bus and you can not leave the wires going on after termination.

This is correct

More accurate:

Terminate the ends of the "chain" always. One on controller, or One end terminated of the second port or a free end of cable then controller in middle (not terminated) and cable to the end which is also terminated.

Another is Terminated controller, then cable to it then other end the last connector terminated (either via terminator or on the drive itself).

I dealt with scsi few times before and love them.
